Recess after lunch
Is it normal for teachers to make kids finish their morning work during recess if they have not finished it? IMO it does not seem fair. They need the break after lunch.

Re: Recess after lunch
yes, its normal. It SHOULD NOT happen every day, but sometimes, yes. If your child is consistently not finishing work on time, I would request a conference with the teacher to find out whats going on. Unfortunately, its all about academics these days. They do not want any child to fall behind, and missing 1 or 2 days of work can set a child back.

Re: Recess after lunch
I only do it if a kid is clearly not making good use of time. If someone works diligently and still doesn't finish before lunch, then they can finish it at home.

Re: Recess after lunch
He is consistently not finishing his work and it is not becuase he can't do it. I had to the permanent sub about it and told her I did not want him doing that work then. He does lose free time at the end of the day when work is not finished and I am okay with that but I just feel like recess is supposed to be their break from the class. If I was not able to leave my desk for the entire day, I would not be productive or happy.

If he is consistently not finishing his work and all the other children are, then there might be something else going on. I would request a meeting with the teacher ASAP.

I agree that you should definitely be aware of what's going on and why. If he is working independantly for the allotted time and not finishing he might just be a slow worker and shouldn't be penalized, but if he's daydreaming, chatting with friends or just generally making poor use of time, then I agree with the teacher that he should miss recess. This is the year when we begin to teach kids to make good choices regarding school work. There has to be consequences for making bad choices IF it happens regularly. Once in a whle we ALL have a bad day.
But in any event, you really should shoot the teacher an email. This doesn't necessarily warrant a meeting, but you should be kept in the loop. That way you can encourage him to make good choices and maybe reward him on his good days if there is a need.
Let me know what you find out, or if I can help you with a reward system or whatever.

Yes, it is in our school. Also if they forget their homework, they have to finish during recess.
I'm totally for it though.

Re: Recess after lunch
Well I spoke to the teacher and he didn't get free time, she rarely takes his recess from him only if it is an extreme situation. Apparentyl my son is confusing recess and free time, and since they had free time in the morning yesterday and not at the end of the day he got confused.
They can't seem to maintain focus consistently. Some days are great other days she needs to be on top of them and constantly getting them back on task. She has tried reward charts, stickers for completing work and nothing consistently works. Sometimes the reward matters other times it does not. She got them to finish their morning work independently and quickly this morning by using the new nutes in the classroom as incentive, but tomorrow that might mean nothing to him.
