recommend shrubs to put along fence for privacy
Im not sure what the names are of the shrubs people plant along their fences for additional privacy, Ive seen a few different ones.
We want something that will grow at least 6 feet tall and will grow wide as well.
About how much do they run? we dont need to buy them already 6 ft tall. We are planning on buying them small and letting them grow tall to save $

Arborvitae, you can get them at most most nurseries. Costco sometimes sells them as well.

Red Cedars. Ours are almost 9 feet now. We also have Arborvitae, but I am not crazy about them.
Another great one is a Leyland cypress.

Re: recommend shrubs to put along fence for privacy
My whole property is lined with leyland cypress trees. I absolutely love the privacy! However, in the big storm we had, we lost one whole side-about 9 trees. We didnt realize it at first, but when we went out a week or so later, we could literally move the trees about a foot in any direction! they are very shallow rooted and just could not withstand the storm. They could not be saved and when we had a tree person come and look at them he said this is pretty typical of this type of tree b/c they are so shallow rooted. I was so sad to see them go!

Re: recommend shrubs to put along fence for privacy
Arborvitae tend to grow up, and keep their pyramidal shape, not spreading out too much. Leyland Cypress grow up and spread out more. My brother lined his yard with Arborvitae last year and is replacing them with Leyland Cypress because he wants more privacy.
ETA: I don't think you need to buy them 6 feet tall unless you want instant privacy.

No we aren't going to replace them, we are going to get a 6 ft fence and take it from there. i do hate losing the privacy, especially b/c that is the side of the yard that our pool is on-and the neighbors kid is already talking to us over their fence! :)

Re: recommend shrubs to put along fence for privacy
Personally, I dislike the effect that a line of the exact same shrubs creates. Since spring to fall is when I want my privacy, I'm using things that are not evergreen but are much prettier than a straight line of arborvitae.
Ornamental grasses Forsythia Lilac Butterfly Bush Purple Smokebush
There are a lot of others out there too, if you're willing to give up winter privacy.
