Red light cameras when there is a big truck in front of you
This has happened to me more than once, and each time I kept saying to myself that I should post this on LIF and see what you all say.
Often I will be behind a big truck approaching a light, and sometimes with a truck in the next lane, also. It's hard to see the status of the light (if it's green, yellow, red) due to the large truck and this is WITHOUT tailgating the truck in front of me.
I always wonder if you got a ticket for going through the light, if this would be a reasonble explanation.
This ever happen to you? (not the ticket thing, but noticing that you can't see the light status due to a large truck in front of you)?

Re: Red light cameras when there is a big truck in front of you
That is probably not going to be a valid excuse to get off. Forget the red light ticket, what if you hit a car travelling in the other direction that clearly has the green?
I just don't put myself in that situation where any vechicle blocks my view of the traffic lights. I avoid trucks like the plauge anyays as they consistently kick rocks and debris up which destroy the paint on my cars.
Many intersections have more than one light, plus the pedestrian crosswalk light so I usually have a view of at least one of them at any given time. Nine times out of 10 I am watching the crosswalk lights anyways to gague when the light might start to turn.

Not the same thing but I've been stuck at an intersection behind an indecisive driver when the light changed.
Maybe because of the angle of my car or they can tell I had no choice, but I have yet to receive a red light ticket and I know that the camera (flash) got me. This has happened a couple of times.

this is what i do - especially useful with the crosswalk lights that have a countdown

Nope, not a valid excuse. While you don't have control over the truck in front of you, you have control over your vehicle. You are supposed leave enough distance between you and the vehicle in front of you to see all traffic signs and lights.
I'm guilty of this too though. I'm usually sweating through the intersection hoping I clear it in time.

I don't think they take anything as an excuse. I was ticketed by one of the cameras during an ice storm where the roads were completely frozen over..by the time I got to the yellow light, if I had applied my brakes I was afraid I would have just slid through the intersection anyway. The cars in the other 3 lanes did the same exact thing. In the video you can clearly see the weather and road conditions.

Re: Red light cameras when there is a big truck in front of you
I keep enough space between me and the trucks to see the light--forget the red light ticket, as another poster pointed out, it would be worse if a car proceeding through the green light hit you.
If people behind me don't like it because I may be going slower, they can pass me and deal with the truck or stew-not worth the chance.

Re: Red light cameras when there is a big truck in front of you
I travel on Sunrise Hwy in the RVC, Freeport, Bellmore area every day and every once in a while I find myself behind a truck and cannot see the light(s). Sometimes there is even a truck in the lane next to us and I can't see other lights. It is very nerve wracking for me, but I do try to slow down and let more room in between me and thr truck to see if I can get a view of the light.
I highly doubt that this is a valid excuse to get out of a ticket.

Re: Red light cameras when there is a big truck in front of you
I actually think hesitating through a light can be dangerous too so not sure I would fall back that much behind anyone. An indecisive driver can cause accidents.
Sorry, not helpful to your question but sometimes that's life.
I also avoid trucks whenever possible. I would rather drive on the Northern State than the LIE any day no matter where I'm going.

if an ambulence is behind you, then theyd also get a snapshot of the ambulence going through the light, so maybe they would waive it then?

No, because its still running a red light... if you cant see past the truck traffice law requires to give extra following distance..
Look at it this way....... 1.you have a truck in front of you, you don't slow down enough to see the light to make sure its not red and go through it 2. You collide with another vehicle(who had the green light 3. Your at fault for - your vehicle collision deductible - the other vehicles damage - any injury's from the other vehicle.. It could be alot more expensive then just the $50 ticket.
