Red wine drinkers...connoisseurs...

Can you help me pick a wine?

I got my boss in the office Secret Santa. He's from the NE and loves chocolate and red, dry, non-sweet wine.

Number 1

Lafite Reserve Speciale, (Medoc), 2003
A pleasurable wine from the profound 2003 vintage! Ripe berry fruit with mouthfilling flavors and soft, balanced tannins make this an outstanding value in red Bordeaux excellence.

This 2003 Medoc is a particular success and a personal favorite of Baron Eric de Rothschild, an avid hunter, who enjoys serving this wine to friends at dinners hosted at his favorite hunting lodges.

Size: F - 750 ml

Number 2

Thierry Germain, Saumur-Champigny, 2004
"This wine has a beam of pure, lush blackberry and boysenberry fruit, along with suave toast, cocoa, mineral and tobacco notes. Concentrated, but lush through the finish, this drips with both terroir and fruit." - Wine Spectator 91pts

Thierry Germain was an outsider in the Loire Valley when he left his native Bordeaux region where his family owns vineyards . He now makes some of the most outstanding Saumur Champigny wines in the Appellation .

Size: F - 750 ml

Number 3

Andeluna, Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, 2003
2003 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is made from premium grapes grown at an elevation of approximately 4,200 feet on the Andeluna estate in the foothills of the Andes.
This wine has great color intensity with purplish tones and is full bodied and complex. It exhibits aromas of black pepper, spices and red fruits with flavors of black currant and cherry and notes of tobacco and chocolate that complement the sweet tannins.

Size: F - 750 ml

Re: Red wine drinkers...connoisseurs...

I can tell you that a Red Zinfendel goes very well with chocolate-- it's a typical pairing.

A couple of good ones would be Ravenswood, Seghisio, or Ridge.

Thanks Randi. I was told that he's partial to Cabernet though. Ugh!! Chat Icon

I have to agree with Randi - Zinfandel (particularly Ravenswood - my fave) goes well with chocolate (and I hate chocolate!).

This also comes from a Cab drinker. I branched off and tried something new and fell in love with Zinfandel and Pinot Noir...still dislike Merlot though Chat Icon

Be risky and introduce him to something new...

Re: Red wine drinkers...connoisseurs...

Try a California Cab. Sterling Vineyards has a 2003 Cab that we get..it's really good.

I think it's under $20 by a hair.

Mmm, Sterling is yum but I've never been able to get it for under $20 - I usually see it closer to $26.

I found one for $24...am looking into all the options. I gotta order today!! Chat Icon

Sterling, Cabernet Sauvignon, 2003
A deep purple, red ruby hue, the nose shows elegant black plum fruit with layers of rose petals, toffee, chocolate, vanilla and anise, also hints of eucalyptus. On the palate, the wine is bright and well balanced with a rich mouthfeel. Flavors of ripe blackberry, plum and black cherry are followed by notes of nutmeg, cloves and a long dark chocolate finish, with soft, chalky tannins.

Size: F - 750 ml

But he likes a dry wine? I wouldn't say Zin is dry even if you look at the descriptions they say, lush, rich. I agree that Zins are excellent(my preferred red) but you may want to go with a chianti or something from Bordeaux.

The Cab Sav is nice; I agree with Randi about Red Zin. I don't personally like it, but his taste seems opposite mine--so he may! Many Zins have a full, berry flavor....we ordered one from CA that Dan loved. I forget the name....let me think.

There are two. One is the Sterling that costs about $26 but there is another with a silver label that costs about $20. Lemmee look...wish I had a bottle in the house.

Re: Red wine drinkers...connoisseurs...

Sasha-make sure you can have wine shipped to your state. There may be some restrictions.

Here's a link to buy Sterling from the Vinters Collection. It's a 2004 but should be drinkable if it's decanted.

This is the one we get when we don't want to spend a lot.

Sterling

I went to Ravenswood Vineyard. I loved their stuff and brought home a few bottles for us. I am not a zin fan so I ddin't get any of that. But I am a new fan of the vineyard.
