Suit Claims Actress Fired Over Pregnancy



Former "General Hospital" actress Kari Wuhrer sued ABC-TV on Thursday, contending her character was written out of the soap opera and she was fired for becoming pregnant.

Wuhrer, 38, filed the discrimination and wrongful termination suit in Los Angeles County Superior Court. She is alleging she suffered at least $3 million in damages to her earnings, career and through the cost of emotional distress.

Details of the suit were first reported by TMZ.com.

"We have not been served and we do not comment on pending litigation," ABC said in a statement.

Wuhrer played Reese Marshall on the show. According to her suit, she notified the writers and producers that she was pregnant in August so they would have time to write her condition into the script.

Instead, Wuhrer said she was fired two weeks later.

"The vile underbelly of the Hollywood Machine encourages female actors to be as beautiful and slim as possible," the suit said.

It added that an actress who "dares" to become pregnant has one choice: "Terminate her pregnancy or be terminated."

The suit accuses the defendants of sex discrimination, pregnancy-based discrimination, wrongful termination, failure to provide reasonable accommodations for pregnancy and other allegations.

I wonder what the outcome will be. I've heard that it is in soap actor's contracts that they need to get it approved if they want to change their appearance, and becoming pregnant falls in that category. Interesting...

I didn't think someone getting pregnant would be a big deal for a soap show i mean they can alway's write it in I guess not! wow I am surprised about that!

Didn't Hunter Tylo do this with Melrose Place and get a big fat settlement??

I thought Reese was terrible, I think her acting got her fired, not her pregnancy!

I agree no one should be fired for being pregnant, but her character was awful & there was a lot yof crappy writing going on at the time , where characters storylines were just sort of ending & they didn't know what to do with them, so I think she would have been written off either way.

I think that's ridiculous. They hide pregnancies all the time on the soaps. She just needs to face it that her character s*cked and had no future on GH.

They could of made a story line where she becomes pregnant from Rick's baby and rick is torn between her and alexis but sonny thinks its his and wants her too..Then you learn that she also bopped Durant so the storyline would of revolved around which of the 3 were the daddies...
