Reflux moms: did cereal really help?
We had DS's 4 month appointment today. He has reflux and is on Zantac. He still spits up very frquently and a lot comes out. It doesn't seem to bother him though. It just makes a mess. The pediatrician said that cereal may help with the spitting up. I'm EBFing and wanted to hold off on all food until 6ish months. The pediatrician said I could just start gving cereal at night and hold off on other food until 6 months.
I'm still kind of conflicted about starting cereal. If you started cereal at 4 months, did you notice a difference with the reflux? Did you have any problems giving DC cereal?

It didn't help DD, just made a bigger mess when she spit up. I haven't bothered trying with DS.

Re: Reflux moms: did cereal really help?
It helped us tremendously, so much so we didn't have to put DS on Zantac. I pumped all my milk into bottles and added rice cereal to his bottle right before each feeding. His spit-up decreased and he became a happier baby! It doesn't work for everyone, but it worked for us. The trick was finding the right ratio of rice cereal to milk.

Re: Reflux moms: did cereal really help?
Just a question: Are you planning on putting the cereal into BM or formula??
From A LOT of research I have done and speaking to my Lactation consultant andpeople from LLL I have learned that putting cereal into BM for reflux is usually pretty much a waste because enzymes in teh BM will break down the cereal as soon as you put it in defeating the purpose of the cereal which is to "weigh down" the BM in the stomach.
If you are BFing have you tried cutting dairy out of your diet??
ALso, Zantac is a really mild frontline medicine. It did NOTHING for ALexa's reflux. My GI specialist says its not really effective. SHe is on Prevacid and it has WORKED MIRACLES with her reflux and she has a VERY SEVERE case of it according the specialists at Yale.
I woudl look into cutting dairy our of your diet as well as switching meds.....
But this is JMO from my personal experience. FM me if you want some of the studies on cereal and BM.... and reflux info!

I wouldn't be putting it into BM bottles. I'd be spoon feeding him cereal after I BF him at night.
I honestly don't even know if Zantac has helped at all. DS is never really bothered by his reflux. He never lets me know that he has spit up. I either hear it or discover it on us. He just spits up a lot, even hours after he was fed.
I haven't tried cutting dairy out of my diet. If he's more of a happy spitter, would eliminating dairy really help? Would it actually reduce the amount of spit up?

Was just going to say this-I did a lot of research on meds for reflux until we figured out D has a milk allergy and now he is on no meds. Prevacid is supposed to be much better than Zantac-Good luck

DD was a happy spitter too - no other symptoms other than spitting up more than an hour after she ate. I was however, changing both of our outfits multiple times a day.
She started on Zantac, and it actually made her spit up more. We switched to Axid and had a lot more success - it was like night and day.
DD #2 just started on Axid as well and it is working well for her too.
Maybe see if you can switch medicines - maybe it is the medicine that isn't working.

No, just tried a few days then stopped. Not at all.
