Rehoming fee?

So the cats I rehomed to my parents are back in my house because my mother is unable to care for them anymore. In addition to madelyn being allergic, TJ recently tested positive for cat allergy, so keeping them is impossible.

I have exhausted all areas (facebook, here, flyers at my job and DH's job, our vet's office,etc) so I placed an ad on Craigslist. I had a lady respond and she inquired about a rehoming fee. I am terrified that someone is going to take my cats and not be good owners. She mentioned she's home on disability, so someone would be home with them all the time. She can also take both, which makes me very happy.

What is an appropriate rehoming fee?

I think 25-50 per cat is fair. And dont feel bad about a rehoming fee. You SHOULD charge one to keep the crazies and hoarders away. A lot of people who charge rehoming fees in turn donate the money to a shelter. If they cannot afford a $50 rehoming fee then they shouldnt have your kitties.

I agree with you both and thank you for your responses. I just want to make sure I keep the "crazies" away. Donating to the shelter is a perfect idea as well- thank you for that.

It's so true. If $50 is going to break them, then how could they afford to take the cat to the vet, buy food, etc? I think $25 per cat is fair, or $75 for both at max maybe.

I agree and disagree.

I typically say yes to a rehoming fee... HOWEVER....
-crazies can have money too
-someone may be more inclined to get one of the zillion other cats for free on craigslist
-at the end of the day, they are doing you a favor

i would honestly just use your discretion.... obviously $50 should NOT break their bank, but at the same time, they may make unbelievable owners....I would honestly just go with your gut.

p.s. i had to rehome a cat i spent $1200 on.... i gave her away completely for free. it wasnt about money, i just wanted her to go to a good home and the girl already had 3 of the same kind, so i knew she was in good hands.
