Religion topic...strange...
Do you know anyone who is VERY religious that has the "gift" of speaking in strange tongues?
Before you roll over laughing and think I'm crazy...let me tell you that someone told me they know someone who does this...
I got weirded out hearing this and it really made me think...is it possible???

Re: Religion topic...strange...
I've seen it happen. When I was in junior high I had a friend whose family was very religious and sometimes I'd go to thier church with them and there were people speaking tonges all over the place there.
I thought it was very bizarre at 13 so I don't really know if it was real or not, I was just in shock.

It's called glossolalia (speaking in tongues), usually in a Pentecoastal church.
I dont know anyone personally but studied theology in college. Supposedly someone had taped a service & the videotape went blank once someone got the gift of speaking in tongues.

Re: Religion topic...strange...
I heard people in church do it...
Biblically- those who have "the gift" are not supposed to speak in tongues publicy unless there is a translator....
I consider myself a pretty religious person, and do belive GOD does mysetrious things, BUT speaking in tongues- its not for me...

In 8th grade we took a Life in the Spirit Seminar and during it I could. So I 100% believe.

Re: Religion topic...strange...
When I was young, I went with my aunt to her church and she and everyone else were speaking in tongues. Kinda freaked me out. NOt for me.
I think with GOD's existence anything is possible.

Re: Religion topic...strange...
We just talked about this in my philosophy of religion class last week. I've never seen it personally, but according to my professor, speaking in tongues is a kind of babble that everyone hears what they want to out of it. He said it's not like the person says "follow God" in one language and every person understands it in their language verbatim, people interpert it into what it sounds like in their language.

I have heard about glossolalia. However, glossolalia is considered a psychotic thought disorder, and I have hospitalized people for this. Of course, at that point they are not doing it just in church and can not control themseleves. And at times, aren't even religious.

Re: Religion topic...strange...
Not to seem stupid, but what does that mean speaking in tongues? Do you mean different languages? I am confused.
