Remember last week when I said we were letting Shammy out of the cage?
Well the 1st few days he was good. Then all of the sudden he is pooping in the house. On the couch, chair and under the table. we haven't had problems with him pooping in the house since he was about 4 months old. He always was able to wait. We have had other accidents but that's when we realized we had to control the water he was drinking before bedtime.
Could this be because of the change in his daily routine? I read that sometimes changes will make the dog do things they dont usually do (messing in the house, or destruction).
I am so upset- I am feeling like this is a set back.

Re: Remember last week when I said we were letting Shammy out of the cage?
While it is a setback, I'd just take it as he's not ready to be out of the crate yet. I'd put him back in the crate and possibly start out leaving him out of the crate for shorter periods of time. Start with leaving him out for 1/2 hour, then an hour, then so on and so forth. My mom had to do this with her dog. He just wasn't ready to be out full time yet. 1 year is still a puppy so it's okay. I know I feel guilty leaving them in the crate, but it's better than being angry at him or having to clean up a mess when you get home.

You can't go from crate to full run of the house. We went from crate to kitchen (tile floor so easy clean if he messed) to entire house for a trip to the store, then half a day out, then work day with a dog walker. Now he is home 2 days a week from 730am til 6pm alone and he is great. But this took us 2 years to get to this point.
You have to take baby steps on the process.

I have to let DH read this thread. I told him that we need to start letting him out a little at a time.
We are going to start the baby steps.
Thanks ladies

ITA. Just start over again and try again in some time. This is common I believe when change occurs.

Taking Baby steps is the best way to go. Do not think of this as a set back. Shammy is just letting you know he is not ready to have the run of the house yet.

I agree, we did little by little, first crate in the kitchen, then gated kitchen and full run of the house only when supervised. Then full run after he showed he will not poop, pee or chew things for a little bit of time (running errands) then full run by his first birthday
