REMODEL is WELL underway!!! Phase 1 - 1st Floor (PICS) - Updated Pics 12/20 Sheetrock is up
So were are doing a little work...ok alot of work - to our house... It's long awaited, and much anticipated.
It's being divided into two phases. Phase one is the remodel of the 1st floor. Then we'll have to move down there while they continue with Phase 2 which will be the upstairs.
So...without further ado - some pics!!
Ok the fugly BEFORE pic. 1970's paneling as far as the eye can see! 
[11.30.2007] - Demo start
Notice the lovely poles and the giant header. Things that make this space look like a basement - which it's not. It's the first floor.
[12.7.2007] - New Window and French Doors installed
We want to take away the "basement" look of the first floor as much as possible so we made one window bigger and completely removed the other one. In it's place, wood Anderson French Doors, and we sealed up the other exit door that was there.
Next step in eliminating the basement look and feel - removing the lolly columns! 
Here the contractors prepped for the removal of the header and poles
A peek at the 1200lb steel I-beam that will replace the poles and header.
I was verrrry nervous about this part!! 
[12.11.2007] - The poles are gone!!
It took 20 men!!!
We were expecting a flush beam which leaves a small header but they ended up being able to recess it which is even better. There will be no header showing at all!
Here... you can see they demo'd the doorway to upstairs...
We are hoping to see a little more progress before the holidays so if there is, I will have more pics.
Yesterday and today was electrical work and plumbing so there aren't any pics to show really.
So that's all for now!!! 
[12.19.2007] - Sheetrock is up
Alot of the plumbing and electrical was done this week and finally some sheetrock too!
The washer & dryer hook up was done, the highhats were installed (but not completely finished) and my wonderful DH gutted the bath (he's doing that bathroom himself to save some $$$$).
In order from left to right - laundry room, utilities, bath
That's it for now.

It's coming along great! It's going to look really nice without the lolly columns. I have never seen them in the main floor of a house before.

Looks fantatic...BUT I dont understand why you didnt like the paneling??

Very nice! Is that a hi-ranch? I ask because our lower level (the first floor) looks the same and we also had the poles removed and put in a steel beam. They weren't able to recess the steel beam as much, but we still got more room without the poles!

Excellent idea with the bigger window, the doors and the recessed header even though I know it's   it's so worth it.
