Re: Repost - I need help please - college related...
I went to FIT- it's very inexpensive it's a SUNY school
when I graduate tutition was $2500 a semester- books are preety cheap also- b/c most classes don't even have books
finanical aid is available just liek any other school- I don't know too much about that- but I am sure you can look on there website
I loved it- I was also all over the place when I was younger- and did VERY well there
5 years out of school I have more then doubled my starting salary
what part of the fashion industry is she interestead? FIT is a great fashion business and product development school
and they also offer majors like mine- home products development and marketing- which is the only program in the whole country/world focusing on this
FM me if you have more questions

also- if she doesn't want to do design- she wont need a portfiolo
the most popular and easiet major (IMO- and I have this degree) is Fashion Merchandise Manager
it used to be called fashion buying- so it's more business- you have classes about designers and stores- (no wonder I did well )
but this major is a stepping stone for most of the other majors there-
At FIT you get your assoicates and then you Bachlors- so technically I have a double major

when people heard that I actually had LAW class as well as STATISTICS, they were like NOO ?? REALLY ???? I thought you just drew all day
By any chance, did you ever have Prof Mincarelli ??? Id love to see him/chat with him again!! LOVE THAT GUY!!! A few recent people havent heard of him, I gotta look him up. what a riot ! and Prof Johnson in textiles she annoyed me..

Re: Repost - I need help please - college related...
Thanks ladies!!!!
She is developing a portfolio - she has been taking Fashion and Design at HS since 9th grade...
Like any senior, she doesn't know what she wants to do with her interest - thats the thing about going to college - you either feel things out, or work towards your major and it helps streamline your interests, or, you take a class as an elective, and realize you love it, and go in a different direction....
honestly, she loves to look at magazines and hairstyles, makeup, clothing, etc. She spends hours getting dressed and putting her outfit together. She is great with makeup - I told her she should look into being a makeup artist.... But she is just interested in it. She really should get into a school and start streamlining her interests - but she needs to get in...
I'm so afraid June is going to roll around, and nothing will happen, and she will spend the next fall sleeping until 2 pm and responsible for watching her sister every evening....

Maybe let her go to Nassau for the first two years...it's inexpensive and convenient and most importantly, if she's not quite ready to do the "serious school" thing it at least gets her started.
My sister didn't know what she wanted to do when she got out of HS and ended up doing the two years at Nassau, figuring out what she really wanted and is now taking classes at Post for an art major.

I don't mean to be negative, but if she doesn't want to get her butt in gear and apply to school, and she's currently cutting classes left and right, she may not be ready for the responsibility / independence of being in college. I teach college freshmen and the students who are forced into going to college and aren't mature enough to motivate themselves, are the ones who aren't around the second semester.
That being said, it does seem like she needs a positive role model to help get her motivated. Maybe you can help her do some research about the schools. Spend some time looking at the school web sites, plan a day to go speak with an admissions counselor and take a tour of the schools. Maybe you can help by setting deadlines for completing different parts of the applications to help her through the process?
The Financial Aid process is foreign to me as I don't work in that area, but each school does have a Financial Aid office, so they will be able to answer some of your questions. Admissions may be able to help you with this as well. I believe the FAFSA form is a major part of this, and is filled out after your tax return is completed (so complete your tax returns early this year!)

ITA. You can help her get in, but if she's not ready to take the responsibility to do the homework and go to class when it is basically optional, she isn't going to last longer than a semester. I think NCC is a great way to ease her into college, and get started with fashion. She could also apply to some other local SUNYs as back up--Old Westbury, Stony Brook, Farmingdale--and she could live in the dorm at all of those, or commute if she doesn't want to do the dorm thing. SUNY/CUNY tuition is so low that even if she takes out loans it wouldn't be a huge financial burden for her later.
Maybe see if she can do an overnight visit to FIT with someone living in the dorm. I know that usally helps the high school students get much more excited about college and dorm life.
ETA: Did she take her SATs yet? I'm not sure of the dates, but she may have missed the final fall date, in which case her only choice may be NCC. I think all the SUNYs and CUNYs require SATs for student straight from high school.
