Repost: Does anyone know how to find out about volunteering...
with a pet shelter or something along those lines? I love animals and am looking for something for a couple of hours a week and near my home (Selden, NY)

You can begin by doing a search on Petfinder.org. They have a section for rescue orgs. Most of the time if you contact them directly & explain that you want to volunteer they jump all over it 
Also PetSmart has volunteer opportunities with their kitty adopotion. They have volunteers early Sat mornings come in & socialize with the cats & clean their cages.
Also try the LI Greyhound rescue. I am pretty sure they have a branch by you. 
Volunteering is so great & very rewarding! Good Luck!

Little Shelter needs volunteers. They are in Huntington.
I used to volunteer in a animal shelter. It was very rewarding.
