Repost from NFR..my friend's dog attacked their baby
I hate when I hear stories like this. Because while we all love dogs, they are, in the end, animals and have animal instincts!
Their mutt (not sure exactly what the dog is, looks like a skinny lab and greyhound mix) grabbed their 11 month old by her head yesterday and thrashed.
The baby has a ton of stitches in her head as well as a skull fracture. It did not cause brain injury as far as they know, but the swelling in her head is severe and looks "misshapen" according to my friend.
They are devestated as they are trying to now adopt out their dog who they've had for 5 years..but I do not blame them. The dog doesn't know better, and the situation really stinks any way you look at it, but they are doing what is right for them. I am just sickened by it, we had just been talking last week about dogs and babies and she was saying how much Delaney loved the dog and how gentle he was with her..

how horrible....that is so heartbreaking for the whole family...poor baby. I do not know what I would do in that situation. I love my dog but if she ever hurt dd, I would be devistated. I hope he gets better soon.

Yup we were just talking about it! Animals are animals and do not have the same thinking logic as us. I feel horrible for the baby and the family

Sorry this is long!
I think the message to take from this is that even if you trust your dog/cat, etc, you should never leave your child unattended with your dog. I don't think the answer is to get rid of dogs in case they might act such as this unexpectedly. I think the answer is never put your child in that position or your dog for that matter. Never leave dogs and children alone even for a second, until the child is wayyy larger than the dog and much older.

How horrible.
It really is so sad. I have this insane fear of dogs, and I try not to pass that on to my children. But dogs can react so fast, you never know.

Growing up, my neighbor had a boston terrier. Good friends of ours. I bent down to see the dog, and a fly landed on my nose and the dog went after it and chomped my nose! The dog was only acting like a dog and therefore, as much as it hurt me, I knew that (I was about 8). Dogs are instinctive, they may go after something, or someone, for any reason, not necessarily maliciously but of course, not being humans, what do they know?
My dogs are very rough players, although they are tiny. They could hurt a child (by accident) and I don't doubt this. That is why I would neve leave my dogs alone with a baby or small child. I already know my dogs are capable of being rough, and acting like "dogs".
Point here is, many people say "my dog would never do that..." but they are taking for granted that the dog has the same brain as a human. Moral of this story....do not leave children unattended with dogs that are larger than them, esp if the child is not able to walk or fend for itself. This is a very sad situation that I wonder why the dog did what it did, was it playing, did it go after something, esp if it had no history of such? Was it a large dog? Was the child alone with the dog for even a second?
My friend will never know the full story. Her sister is her DD's caretaker. She was cooking dinner and the baby and dog were right outside the kitchen playing as always. she heard barks and then screams....she had to pry the baby's head out of the dogs mouth.
The reason I posted the story is b/c so many people will say how gentle their dog is and wouldn't hurt a fly. HOWEVER...how soon we forget that dogs react on animal instinct..they are animals!!
And yes, it was a large mutt. As big as a full grown lab but honestly I'm not sure exactly what the dog is..

I agree, she may never know the real story. The sis may feel responsible and who knows what really happened. To me, it is very sad that the child got hurt, but it is also very sad that a dog was put in a position to be expected to have the intelligence of a human.
How terrible on both ends!

I completely agree with this. They are animals after all, and cannot be trusted 100%. I have seen a dog that I had growing up, who was the most gentle creature ever, snap in an instant toward another dog for NO reason. Ever since then, I could never trust any dog/cat with a baby.
