Repost from Pet Forum but figured it would get more traffic

Scott and I were watching my parents 14 year old yorkie while they are in Italy. Well, we haven't gotten any sleep since Easter. I have tried many differnt things but he cries and howls all night long. And because of his age he has been peeing in the house everywhere. Last night I gated him in the kitchen and took up any rugs. he still was not happy. This morning I had enough and drove him back to my parents house (this was at 6:30am). Although we are not far it is a pain to go back and forth all day for the next week.

My parents called my sister today from Italy and my mom said to board him. This is the problem:

Our vet does not let them out of the cage except for cleaning. I called East Meadow and they let the dogs out 2X a day in a gate area. I have no idea how thery treat animals and with Benji's age I am very concerned. What do I do? Anyone ever use East Meadow Animal Hosiptal.

Sorry so long.

TIA

I wouldn't board him... can you just leave him at home (his home) and go check on him few times a day? If you keep him in a designated doggie-proof area, he should be ok.

How long are they in Italy for?
Would it be possible for you to stay at your parents house for a couple of days?

Re: Repost from Pet Forum but figured it would get more traffic

They wont be home till next wednesday, and honestly it is hard to go there 4 to 5 times a day to feed him and take him out to go to the bathroom. Danielle is on vacation this week, and if she has to do this then she wont have the opportunity to do anything else. Its not fair to her.

If East Meadow is no good -dthen can someone recommend a kennel local to levittown?
thanks

Nope - because then my puppy will be out of wack with his potty training. Tiny was already starting to pee in the house, and Benji was only there for a few days. Tiny was doing so good before Benji came to the house.

Is he crate trained? If he is, try covering his cage at night. That should help to quiet him down.

i agree. i know boarding is sometimes necessary but i would try to avoid it. ya never know whats going around and with his age it might not be good. plus a shock to him to be left alone in a strange place might be hurtful too

I posted on Pets about EMAH - I'd like to know why some people are against it though. We've been bringing Golem there since we first brought him home and they've been wonderful and Craig and I are really happy with our vet. Who had a bad experience there?Chat Icon

I would just deal with running back and forth. It stinks but I would hate to see the dog in such distress and I would be afraid boarding him would be even worse for him. It's only a week and there may be a time when you will really need to rely on them to watch your dog in the future.

Do they have a neighbor with a key that could let the dog out once or twice during the day to take some of the pressure off you guys?

Yes, we did tell my parents we would take care of the dog. But we aren't getting any sleep and he is ruining our home, which everything is brand new. I also wouldn't make the decision without discussing with them. They did call from Italy and my sister spoke to them about different options.

Re: Repost from Pet Forum but figured it would get more traffic

can your sister watch him for ya for a few days?? they do sell diapers that you can put on him if the peeing is a problem. i just feel that putting him in a kennel will be to much on a 14 year old dog. plus I'm sure you don't want anything bad to happen and god forbid something goes wrong when he is in a kennel that would just be bad. Sorry to keep downing you but I don't think it is fair for him.

Re: Repost from Pet Forum but figured it would get more traffic

I don't want to have to put him in a kennel either. My sister has three fours all under the age of four. I will probably end up running back and forth, but when my vacation is over, I can't get there in the morning so I might not have achoice but to board him for three days.

If your going to board him anyway why not just keep him at your house in his crate? That way he's there and you can still let him out whenever you want.. Hes old and probably just really out of his element
