Repost from special needs....Big Johnny update

Well, we had our one year re-evaluation at Johns Hopkins pediatric neurology center the other day.

For those of you familiar with my story, Johnny went through a very grueling experience last year being evaluated. Over 6 hours of tests to be told that he seemed to be mild pdd-nos, although did a lot of things that were more typical than not. He didn't have much language at the time, short phrases, some echolalia...hand flapping etc...

Well we had a team of doctors evaluate him this year and they told us that he does not meet criteria for autism. He is now 3 years, 8 months and I can't even tell you the progress one year has made. full conversations, awesome imaginative play, no stims (well an occasional flap of the hands) etc..

It doesn't mean we are issue free. And I mean this when I say that even if we had had the pdd-nos label still apply I would feel the same way about him. I have always tried to view my son as JUST JOHNNY. A kid who has some "stuff" going on, but is the light of our lives and makes us smile everyday. It was nice to hear of course that the doctors didn't feel it was autism at all..they actually labeled him ADHD..

I found this interesting...they said that in some cases, young children are misdiagnosed pdd-nos when it actually is language delay paired with ADHD. Sometimes children can exhibit sensory seeking behaviors that are autistic charachteristics...who knows....

I do know he'll have his struggles. Lord knows he can't sit still for long, and to tell you the truth he can be socially awkward with other kids. But even with that considered, they still said the label doesn't apply...

If anyone has any specific questions for me i'd be happy to answer them (for example what happened during the eval). Just wanted to share our story. Thank you for reading!!
