Repost from teaching board - tenure lesson
My tenure lesson is coming up and I am looking for ideas for a lesson. I teach 2nd grade, and I am leaning towards math or language arts. Any ideas? TIA

Not sure...I would lean more towards math since you can use manipulatives...and I think they like to see that since that is the buzz word these days...what math program do you use?

What do you mean about a tenure lesson? One lesson determines tenure?

Re: Repost from teaching board - tenure lesson
This is the lesson where the superintendent comes in to observe and recommends me for tenure.
I use Everyday Math.

Re: Repost from teaching board - tenure lesson
I'll respond to your thread here, though this thread might be moved in the near future.
I haven't been in the classroom for a few years now, but I remember how the principals LOVE when you do some sort of cooperative group lesson. I taught second grade for 7 years. I would always (pre arrange) the desks in groups. Before your obervation, be very careful how you group your kids. Don't put all the "smart" kids in 1 group. Make sure you have 1 very bright child in each group to help out.
Every child is designated a job- group leader, recorder (person who writes down all pertinent info), moderator (person who controls the behavior of the group) the presentor(s), and the participators (the other kids). Don't make your group larger than 5 per group.
You will need to have done cooperative learning several times BEFORE attempting this for the first time as an observation. Before the observation, in front of the superintendant, reinforce the roles of the cooperative learning groups. This impresses the powers that be GREATLY!!
As for the lesson, it needs to be hands-on. No worksheets- only for recording info.
The lesson I love was something like "How many Pigs and Chickens?"
Write the following word problem on the board:
Farmer Joe loved to count. He counted everything on his farm. His favorite thing to count were the chickens' and pigs'feet. Farmer Joe counted 32 feet. How many chickens and pigs are on Farmer Joe's farm?
Have the kids draw pictures to solve. There are many answers. Have each group come to a conclusion. Record on paper with drawings.
After each group has solved, have presenter come to the front of the room and present their info. Work it out on the board.
Discuss all answers.
Then, in your lesson plan...you can intefgrate this lesson into many other areas of curriculum: Language Arts- Farm books, journal writing Social Studies- Rural communtites, goods and services Art- Farm dioramas
The limits are endless!!
And I really hope you read this response cause this took me FOREVER to type!
