Repost from Teaching: Interview

In the next 2 weeks I have a bunch of interviews scheduled.

I am 20 weeks pregnant and it is noticable.

My baby is due in the beginning of July, but the dr said I will probably go at the end of June.

I know they can't legally ask me anything about being pregnant. Do you think I should bring it up or forget about it since I will have more than enough time to recover over the summer?

I'm just wondering if either they will 1) Be smart enough to kind of figure out i will have the baby way before September or 2) Pass over me since they can't ask me about it.

What would you do?

They'd have one hell of a lawsuit if they pass you over for being PG. The problem is good luck proving it. I went on many interviews when I was PG & the only one I was honest with is the job I am at now. I had worked here before & they bridged my tenure, so I could get full disability benefits. As far as what to do I would not mention it, but that is just me. I am not sure if that is the right thing to do.

If you would be back for September classes would it really present a problem though?

I'd bring it up. Even though it's not supposed to be taken into account in these situations, you never know what the other person is thinking.

I'd just say something like "I want to be upfront with you, as you probably noticed I'm pregnant, I'm due in July so I'll be all set to start school in September."

Me too. I know I wouldn't be able to judge *when* someone is due based on their belly, so I definitely think it would be good to say you will be good to go in September (and I might even mention daycare lined up, etc., so they know you won't be delayed getting that settled).

Re: Repost from Teaching: Interview

I had a temp come in to interview and she was 3 months..she was looking all around for perm spots but found a lot of push back and she didn't get the jobs..well a day after I hired her to temp for me she got a call from a very big bank offering her the job of her dreams..they didn't care about the pregnancy and she was upfront and honest with everyone she interviewed with. That paid off for her.

I don't know if I could be that honest but then again, how could you not be..it's noticeable.

I would mention it so they know you will be around from the first day of school. This way they understand the time frame.

Re: Repost from Teaching: Interview

I just went on a campus visit/job interview for a college teaching position at 7 months pregnant. I was sooooooo nervous about how they would react, but they were great and I ended up getting the job.

The advice I received is that you bring it up right away and tell them your due date. I'd even fudge the due date and tell them end of june - since that is when your doctor thinks you'll deliver. Then just state clearly and matter of factly to them that you have every intention of returning to teaching in the fall - wherever that may be.

Then move on to the next topic. They will only worry about your pregnancy if they get the sense that there is no plan in place.

Good luck!Chat Icon

I would tell them you are pregnant, but will be ready to teach in september.

if they pass you up bc of it, you dont want to work there anyway!
