Repost-Just heard the scariest story-Re reflux in newborns...Long
A friend of mine just had a baby girl on Sept 10th named Gabriella-bella for short. 2 weeks ago her DH went to check on her while she lay sleeping on her side. Bella was bright red, not breathing, stiff as a board and seemed to be choking on her spit up.
They immediately called 911 and had to do the baby hemelich on her and she was still choking. the operator instructed her to lay her on her stomach and hit her between her shoulder blades. The baby finally started breathing again. Frantic, she rushed bella to the er where the dr's told her "babies do that". This choking happened 2 more times!! and after each time the drs still told her babies do that. This poor mom still knew something was wrong with her daughter, and kept taking her back to the dr where she was told the same thing over and over again. My friend didn't sleep, or eat for two weeks since she had bella by her side 24/7.
She did some research on her own and found bella's symtoms matched those of acid reflux and called the dr and demanded to speak to him. She rambled off the symptoms of relflux where after each the dr said-yep bella has that, and then goes, I was going to call you after the last appt to tell you i thought it was acid relflux. SHe was LIVID!! She took bella to anohter dr where on the first visit bella was diagnosed with acid relfux and was put on medication, and a different formula.
Just shows that mother knows best and you should always trust your instinct. I was crying listening to this story, I wouldn't want any of you to go through was she went through.
Trust your instincts!! Mom knows what's best for her baby and demand answers!
Please pray for baby bella

AS scary as this sounds this happened to Bryan-- he choked so badly on his reflux that he couldt catch his breath well--he started losing his color-- we rushed him to the ER and he was fine THANK GOD but he had to stay overnight for observations-- it was the worst night ever seeing my baby in those metal cribs in the hospital-- I stayed with him of course---- REFLUX is a scary thing, I dont wish it upon anyone

happened to us too with my 2nd born, her 2nd night hime from the hospital she was laying in her co-sleeper and i heard her gasp and i jumped up and picked ger up and she was struggling to breath, we had to hot her a few times and blew in her face and she finally started breathing again. Aspiration is frightening, always use a crib wedge if your child has reflux, place then on their side and use a positioner, it will insure that these scary situations don't happen to you!

Oh my goodness! how scary!
Does anyone know why the baby get reflux? I have acid reflux, and I always have had over active stomach acid. I wonder if that's something I can pass onto the baby?

it is genetic, but some babies get it regardless, it is because of immature GI systems, it's very common.

I had no clue it was genetic. DH has it, so I'm surprised Christopher doesn't. We got lucky! It seems like it's so scary. Lots of 's to mommies whose babies have this!!!

Re: Repost-Just heard the scariest story-Re reflux in newborns...Long
No one in my family has it either and 2 of my kids have it, one worse than the other, but I remember when my 2nd dughter was diagnosed with it at an ER visit at North Shore, they kept asking me and my husband if we suffered from reflux either in adulthood or as a baby, and neither one of us did. On the other hand, I have a girlfriend who suffers from extreme reflux and her kids never had any symptoms, go figure, I just know that they say if you have it, chances are higher that your child will have it too, it;s just like allergies and hx of high fevers etc, all of these things are genetic.

What worries me, is that my father has over active stomach acid too, which is what i have. When I was a baby, i had febric seizures-my temp would shoot up to 105 degrees within seconds. Both my parents had febric seizures when they were infants. Both reflux and high fevers equally scary and worry me that i will pass that onto my little one.
