Very true, and sad. I grew up in East Meadow. I hope this ends soon and the teachers get the pay they deserve

I grew up in EM, my folks still live there. all I know is that my parents pay an INSANE amount of property taxes (Barnum Woods).
so what exactly is a "fair salary"? what % below average is EM paying their teachers?

I live in east Meadow - around the block from Barnum Woods. EM teachers are one of the lowest paid distircts on the Island and the BD of Ed will not budge. I moved here BC of the schools .... now what

they have $47 million dollars sitting in an account. This is money exclusively set aside for the teachers' raises and retro pay (all the money that they didn't pay out in the last 3 years). And they are offering 0% raise for one of those years!

i AM an East Meadow teacher.. they were offering us below 3% , they wanted to increase our medical ins and have THAT retro so that we pay it but they dont want to give us retro for the three years we have worked without a raise. and that is just some of the garbage the board is doing to us...
it takes us 36 YEARS to reach our maximum salary.. Levittown for example 17 YEARS...
I was there at the rally and was overwhelmed to tears by the number of teacher supporters from districts all the way in suffok county to nassau county...
we are one of the lowest paying districts i think # 46 out of 50... my job status was compared to someone exactly like me in the levittown school disctrict and she is making 9,000 more than me and paying less in health insurance...

Kristi, is there a site where you can look up the rankings of teacher salaries by district? Or even what the starting salaries are?
ETA: I hope you get your raises. We are considering East Meadow as a place to buy and I hope things get resolved soon.

agreed!
THis whole thing is so frustrating!
THe district makes us out to be money vultures!
All we want is not be in the bottom 1/3 of salaries!
I really love where I work, the teachers and kids are great but soooooo many teachers are leaving! It is depressing!
I hope it ends soon! But as of right now it does not seem promising!
Thanks to all who attended that rally it was the first time I had smiled at one of those events! It was nice to see who has our backs!

You know I wonder where the money is going b/c our school taxes went up AGAIN. we are paying over 8k in total taxes. it was the school tax that went up. I see the signs all over about the contract, I hope it gets resolved too b/c we were told by a real estate broker that its not good for residents.
AND the taxes just might go up again b/c of the problem with the kid and his dog going on over at clarke with this lawsuit!!!!

I am an East Meadow resident and I am so afraid. My son is only 2 but this is going to cause some problems when he goes. I support the teachers 100%. This is just plain crazy!

We want to move to EM because the schools are good. I would hope that the district would do better than that. I was so surprised that there isn't even a full day kindergarden.
Where's all the tax money going? The property taxes are not that low so......what's the story.
