Returning to work in 1 week... seeking advice about working from home...
I am going back to work FT on June 1... I would like to ask to work from home one day per week... Two ladies in my department have done this in the past (though one of them no longer works there).
Needless to say, in this economy I am very nervous to ask for anything. I am thankful to just have a job. I work in finance if that matters in a department with many women.
Would you be "put off" by an employee who asked to work from home one day per week? What should I give as my reason - to spend time with DS (the real reason)? Daycare issues?
WWYD? Thank you - your advice is really appreciated.

Re: Returning to work in 1 week... seeking advice about working from home...
I was able to work from home for six months before getting laid off in March. My advice would be to make sure that when you approach them, it is not just about you. Employers always want to know what is in it for them. Know that you will most likely be working at night and during naps on that one day. Working with an infant is not easy.
From your post it appears you really want the time to be with your child. Would it be possible to work four longer days and have the one day a week off?

Thank you for this... very true, and a perspective I was forgetting about.

I agree with the PP. You need to tell your employer that you will be dedicated to getting your work done. Whether that means bringing work home during the week to do after DC goes to bed or bringing work home on the weekends.
I currently work one day a week from home (and I am also in finance). I was straight up with my boss and told him that I might not be able to do a 9-5 work day on my day home. But that I would work on the weekend and at night from home if needed.
I also told him that I would do a 5 day work week when needed.
I have been doing this for a year and so far it has worked out great.

my sister did this.... but she had to work longer hours on the days she was in the office... so it was like 3 -10 hour days in the office and 2- 5 hour days at home it makes sense because there is no way you could work the full hours straight when your stopping to entertain, change feed your kid..
