review of Peru vacation (updated with more pics)
DH and I just got back from two weeks in Peru. It was a fantastic trip! The people are incredibly nice, the food is good, and the scenery is amazing.
Our main purpose for going to Peru was to hike the Inca Trail , a four-day hike through the Andes that ends at Machu Picchu. Unfortunately, the weather at Machu Picchu was awful, and so are the pictures. The hike was the highlight of the entire trip. It's the only way to visit Machu Picchu, IMO -- a very difficult but very rewarding experience.
We also went to Lima, Cusco (above Cusco's main plaza, the market at Ollantaytambo), and Lake Titicaca (the lake from Amantani Island, our "hotel" - Lake Titicaca style).

Awesome pictures! I noticed your avatar pic... My DH went to Peru years ago and still talks about the inca kola.

Awesome pictures! I noticed your avatar pic... My DH went to Peru years ago and still talks about the inca kola. It tastes like bubble gum! It's weird but good. Apparently you can get it in some specialty stores here in the States - I'm going this weekend to see if I can find some.

Re: review of Peru vacation (with pics)
I have a gazillion pictures of the hike but they're not in any particular order. I'll try to organize them and post more.
The hike was 4 days/3 nights. The first day was exciting, the second day was exhausting (ALL uphill to almost 14,000 ft above sea level -- three members of our group got altitude sickness), the third day was a really lovely hike through cloud forest, and the fourth day you arrive at Machu Picchu from above, so you get a sense of how it's literally carved into the mountain...and wonder how anyone could have found the place since it's so remote. It was spectacular.
We had porters to carry our tents and sleeping bags and stuff. They raced ahead of us to set up camp and always had a steaming cup of coca tea (supposed to combat altitude sickness) waiting for us after the day's hike. They prepared all our food, and it was all delicious. Three-course meals while camping - unheard of!
Just FYI, you have to get a permit for the hike, and they're sold out months in advance. The number of hikers is strictly limited by the Peruvian government. You can also get to Machu Picchu by train from Cusco (2 hours?), then ride a bus 30 minutes up the mountain.
ETA: I had to look it up when I got home - the hike was about 26 miles.

Re: review of Peru vacation (with pics)
I'd love to visit Peru. One of my old co-workers actually lived in Peru for 3 months for the company and loved it.
I became very friendly with one of the agents in Peru and she gave me such beautiful items from Peru.
One day I do hope to go down and visit.

Sounds incredible. I had wondered about the sleeping & dining arrangements. Sounds perfect...well, aside from the 26 miles LOL
Would love to see more pics when you get a chance.

Re: review of Peru vacation (updated with more pics)
wow, the pictures are actually very good in my opinion. Question, would that trip be something too rough to go with my parent ( 65)?

Re: review of Peru vacation (updated with more pics)
Thanks!
The hike is really hard for anyone not in decent shape. But there was a 65-year old woman and her 70-year old husband in my hiking group who outdid some of us younger ones!
Even though I HIGHLY (x100) recommend it, you wouldn't have to do the hike. There are definitely easier ways to get to Machu Picchu!
