Richie Sambora has opened up about his recent stay in a Los Angeles treatment facility.

"I did detox," the Bon Jovi rocker, 47, told Matt Lauer Tuesday morning after his band performed live on the Today show.

"I didn't check into rehab," he clarified. "Instead of me heading into a place – I was just drinking too much and I needed to get my life together. I'm still in therapy and stuff like that, but it's good. I'm great. I feel fine."

The topic came up after Lauer quoted a lyric from Bon Jovi's new album, Lost Highway: "There's a lot of leaving going on." Said Sambora: "Ooh, that's all about me."

After Sambora explained his reason for seeking treatment, singer Jon Bon Jovi said: "We've been through everything together and there was no way that we were not going to be supporting Richie right now – and that's what we're doing. He's been through the fire, and we've been there for him."

"Yeah, my dad died too," Sambora added. "It's been a rough year."

Sambora completed a program at the UCLA Medical Center on June 13. This has been a trying year for the rocker: In April, his divorce from Heather Locklear was finalized and his father died of lung cancer. His relationship with girlfriend Denise Richards also ended.
