Ricky Martin named King of the PR day parade
NEW YORK -- Ricky Martin, Puerto Rico's all-time top-selling artist, added a new honor to go with his multiple Grammy awards on Thursday -- he was named king of the 50th annual National Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York. Parade organizers said the honor recognizes Martin's musical success and his efforts to fight the exploitation of children worldwide.
"He has always expressed his pride as a Puerto Rican and a Latino," parade committee president Madelyn Lugo said in a news release. "He has served as one of our greatest ambassadors, and we can't think of a better role model to honor as the King of the Parade."
Martin, named Person of the Year in 2006 by the Latin Recording Academy, accepted with gusto.
"I am honored and very humbly accept the invitation to participate in the 50th anniversary of the national Puerto Rican parade," he said.
Lugo said that while the parade has awarded other titles before such as grand marshal and padrino, or godfather, this year's parade, scheduled for June 10, is the first to have a king.

Go Ricky! I love him even though he's super fabulous.
Thankfully, there are many talented artists/performers/personalities of PR heritage. He's certainly not the only one.

Re: Ricky Martin named King of the PR day parade
Let's not forget Rita Moreno.
Rita Moreno is an Academy Award-winning actress and the first and only Puerto Rican actress in history (as well as one of only twelve people, and the second actor to have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony Award.
And if we're talking about actors...Jimmy Smits, Esai Morales, Benicio del Toro, Chita Rivera, Freddie Prinze, Hector Elizondo, Raul Julia (deceased), etc.
Great sportsmen too...Bernie Williams, "Chi Chi" Rodriguez, Miguel Cotto, Tito Trinidad, Roberto Clemente (deceased), Lisa Fernandez, Gigi Fernandez, Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez, Roberto Alomar, my very own godfather - Edwin "El Chapo" Rosario (boxing) (deceased etc.
One of my two favorite authors...Esmeralda Santiago and Miguel Algarin (poet)...and many more.
We also have some of the most Miss Universe & beauty pageant winners of any country (even though it's a wee bit island).
The list goes on and on...

Re: Ricky Martin named King of the PR day parade
I'm not doubting there are other PR entertainers...if there are so many...then why Ricky Martin?

He's not just an entertainer. I didn't post just entertainers either.
And he was picked because there's a different one picked every single year, and this happened to be his year. Why was this his year? Well, if you read the article, the first paragraph pretty much sums it up...
Parade organizers said the honor recognizes Martin's musical success and his efforts to fight the exploitation of children worldwide.
ETA: While this is the first year the parade in NY has a "King", it is common practice to have a parade King in the "Fiestas Patronales" that take place in the island.
Being that Ricky is a child star turned adult superstar, why not honor him? Born and raised in Puerto Rico of Puerto Rican parents...UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, over 50 million albums sold, actor...why not?!
Again, go Ricky!

Wahhhooo. That's amazing for him. His humanitarian efforts are most certainly impressive!
As for the why hi thing, I relate it to Bono...if he were made King of the St. Patrick's day parade I wouldn't be saying, OOh I haven't heard him on the radio lately. Instead, I would be commenting on his amazing efforts to help curb Aids and such.

Re: Ricky Martin named King of the PR day parade
I guess we can all have a difference of opinion.
I just haven't heard about him in a while and thought it was weird they would make him the "king".
