Riders of the Babylon Branch of the LIRR...
I was driving through Freeport and the surrounding areas on Sunrise highway the other day and noticed that they chopped all the trees down on the south side (east-bound) of the tracks.
Any idea as to why they did this? Are they expanding the tracks?

they did it in rockville centre and lynbrook too. it looks like they are putting up some kind of fence.

It goes all the way from at least Freeport (where I picked up Sunrise off the Meadowbrook) all the way to Valley Stream
Did the really have to get rid of ALL those trees to put up a fence?

I think it helps with two things. Keeps people off the tracks and keeps wet leaves from making the tracks slick.

Yes, I saw it too. There was a segment on News 12 about it a few weeks back. The LIRR did it so that the leaves from the trees won't wall on the tracks, impeding the operation of the trains. I did hear that they were supposed to replant non-leafy trees in thier place (evergreens), but I doubt that will happen.

Wet leaves on the train tracks are seriously dangerous -- as are fallen tree limbs. I think it's for safety AND efficiency. I can't tell you how many times we've gone slower than I could walk home on the train due to slippery track conditions or branches down. It's just dangerous to have all those leaves on the tracks. I think they do need to do something to prevent that.
It would be nice for them to replace them with evergreens or something set back from the track, though, as I hate for LI to lose more green.
