riding a two-wheeler?

and while I'm at it, I admit my 6 year old hasn't learned to ride a two-wheeler. We took off his training wheels, and he has both a 16" and a 20" bike, but it's exhausting for me and my back when I take him to practice! we don't have sidewalks in my neighborhood, so it's not as easy to just hop on and practice, we have to load up the bikes in the car and head to a park. Part of the reason he hasn't learned yet!

Is he way behind his peers?? I think I am taking a break teaching him until the fall, when it's cooler. I learned to ride a two-wheeler at age 4!! My poor kid

DS learned to ride a two wheeler when he was six and I felt he was behind too! He picked it up pretty quickly with DH taking him to ride in an empty parking lot over a few weekends.

Do you have an old, smaller bike? Let him learn on that. It is so much easier for them and will save your back. Within a few days you can move him up.

Trish, I lived in Queens till I was 9, and didn't learn to ride a regular bike till I was 9 and a half! My friend taught me, once I got the hang of it, I was fine and able to keep up with my friends

DS learned just before he turned 6 on a smaller bike. He was really determined once he saw his friends riding.

DS was around 5 or 6 when he learned but DD resisted a lot more and didn't learn until 7

My DS is 7 and still has his training wheels. DH keeps saying this summer he will teach him how to ride w.o. them. I know he wants to learn because he is starting to notice kids his age that ride bigger bikes w.o. the TW and he gets embarrassed about it.

Trish, you need this thing they sell at the bike store. It looks like a sissy bar that bikes use to sometimes have years ago but it attaches the the rear wheel axle. It gives an adult the ability to help keep the bike upright while the child is learning. I don't know what the name of it is is but both my kids learned very quickly by using this bc they were less afraid of falling. If you go to a bike store they should know exactly what it is. I would lend you mine but I just lent it to the parent's of one of T's friends. We got it from my BIL and my nephew learned really quick using it too.

my DD is 6 and still using training wheels. We have been talking about taking them off but she is not ready, and I don't want to push her, maybe in thefall

My 6 year old still has training wheels. Her bike is 20" and she can barely stand flat footed so she really does still need them... even though she wants them off. We might do it later this summer. I have heard learning on a smaller bike is better and then once you get it you can do it on any size bike.

Damien is 6 and also still uses training wheels. He would rather be in the pool than riding his bike, so we hardly ever even try.

He doesn't tie his shoes either but he always gets the velcro kind anyway.

Noah just learned to ride a two wheeler in May. My goddaughter turned 7 in January and hasn't learned.

I remember thinking that ti would be harder to teach them then it actually was. I taught Robbie in a couple of hours. Noah decided he wanted to learn for me as a gift. I wasn't there but it was done in a single day and Rob said it only took 3 or 4 times with him holding him and Noah did better when he let go.
