R.I.P. Darwin - 10/26/2010
Well, today was Darwin's final day with us in the flesh. He was getting noticeably worse every day. Kara's poem really helped to put a more positive spin on everything. It really was what was best for him. He lived a very long and happy life. We had him for about 13.5 years. We adopted him from the Riverhead Animal Shelter. Someone found him wandering around the train tracks looking for food. He's always been afraid of noises, plastic bottles and paper noises, so we think he may have been abused, too.
I'm comforted knowing that he spent the vast majority of his life in a home where he was well taken care of, and well loved.
When I took him to the vet, I thought I'd be OK (relatively speaking)... I wasn't... This was a very hard decision, and after 13+ years, it's not easy to let go.
The house is full of reminders of him, obviously, but each day will get easier.
He's in a better place now..... 
I'm not going to post pics from recently. I want to remember him when he was happy and vigorous.

I am terribly sorry for your loss... as my grandmother always said (she passed at 97) "we are ALL just passing through"
