Riverhead H.S. Principal Makes DWI Wall of Shame
Newsday 7/31/08 Riverhead High School's principal was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after a Suffolk police officer saw him swerving on a service road of the Long Island Expressway on a Friday night in June, according to court records.
School district officials Thursday declined to comment on David Zimbler's arrest.
"This is a personnel matter," said Joseph Ogeka, Riverhead's assistant superintendent for personnel and community services.
Zimbler, 37, of 4 Endicott Lane, Commack, was driving a 2007 Saturn west on the LIE service road near Exit 53 in Brentwood on June 13, according to a misdemeanor complaint filed in court. Zimbler was unable "to remain in marked lanes," it states.
Zimbler's eyes were bloodshot, his speech slurred, his breath smelled of alcohol and he couldn't keep his balance, a police sergeant wrote in the complaint. Zimbler failed a field sobriety test.
A breath test showed a blood-alcohol level of 0.13, exceeding the legal limit, according to the complaint.
He pleaded not guilty to DWI and failing to stay in a single lane at his arraignment June 14. If convicted, he faces up to a year in prison.
Zimbler, who was released without bail, could not be reached for comment Thursday.
His Mineola attorney, Michael Franzese, had no comment but said Zimbler's status as principal remains unchanged.
Suffolk district attorney spokesman Robert Clifford said Zimbler had no previous arrests.
Zimbler's next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 14.

I LOVE that wall of shame! I wonder if they'll find it acts as a deterrent...
I'm glad they got the moron - I'm sure if they caught him this once, he definitely drove drunk many, many times before.

I went to Riverhead HS, but he wasn't the principle at the time...
How do you expect kids to not drink and drive when you, as a principal and a role model, do it?
