Rockefeller Center Tree-Spinoff to "Green"

I am not what would be considered a tree hugger, nor am I a Scrooge but while I was watching the lead-up to the Christmas tree lighting on NBC last night I got to thinking.

It was interesting to me how Al Roker was saying that the tree was cut by hand saws and the tree is lighted with low energy bulbs to help conserve energy..Ummm HELLO they just chopped down a healthy 60 foot tree down!!!

Any thoughts???

yeah, I'm distubred by the loss of a majestic tree like that every year too...

but usually, it comes from someones home, where it stand too close to the house, or some other major structure, and they were considering cutting it down anyway.

still very sad Chat Icon

I know what you mean, I was Chat Icon when he was saying it was cut down by hand. PLEASE! the amount of energy used to cut 1 tree down is NOTHING compared to the energy used transporting it there.

I am all for saving the environment but it seems to me like EVERYONE is jumping on the bandwagon just so they can tout being "green" Chat Icon meanwhile, it's a load of BS

That's comforting-good to know. I'm suprised that didn't talk that up more.

They had a whole thing about the tree in the beginning of the "first" show...the family that had the tree had been worried that it was going to come down for a while as it was the highest tree in the area and right next to the house, they used the hand saws to cut it down and apparently the trucks used to transport it are diesel - less fuel, it is being lit with LED lights which use 1/4 of the energy of regular lights and when they take the tree down it's being used as building material for Habitat for Humanity.

Personally, I like that they are attempting to be "green" and at the same time keeping a 75 year old tradition...imagine if there were no Rockefeller Center TreeChat Icon
