Rome - Pre-book tours?
I have heard that lines can be long at the Vatican, Colesseum, etc and that it is good to book a tour. Should we do that when we arrive or do it now? The last time I went to Italy (9 yrs ago) I didnt pre-book anything and our friends were are going with didn't have to pre-book either.
I have heard Through Eternity is a good company to book a tour with. They seem to be reasonably priced and got good reviews on Trip Advisor. It seems beneficial to me to book them for:
3.5 hr tour Vatican/St. Peters Basilica/Sistene Chapel/etc. (do this one day)
5 hr tour Colesseum/Roman Forum/Palantine Hill (do this another day)
Then we can see: Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Pantheon, Borghese Gallery the other days or in the evening.
So should I pre-book the tours? Am I missing anything?

Re: Rome - Pre-book tours?
Definitely do the tour for the Vatican. The lines are horrendous (especially on Wednesdays when the Pope is giving audience) and the tours tend to get in sooner than just people that bought tickets.
I definitely recommend doing the jump-on jump-off bus. You can get a ticket for the bus for 24 hours and you go all over the city. The Colliseum didn't have really long lines for us to go in and the other stuff we didn't need a tour guide. The bus also lets you do things at your leisure.

Re: Rome - Pre-book tours?
we booked a tour for the vatican. there is so much information that it is worth it!
we didn't book tours for anything else. we waited online for the colliseum for maybe 30 minutes and got tickets for a guided tour there and then we went through palatine hill, etc on our own with a guide book that we brought. the ticket for the colliseum include palatine hill within 24 hours i think it was. so we did the colliseum one day and palatine hill the next morning before the vatican.

If the lines are too long at the first group of places and you didn't book in advance, there will be plenty of people w/umbrellas or sticks up in the air putting a group together on the fly. They'll take you right in once they have enough people.
The second group of places has kind of the same thing if you start out at the Col. They also have the audio tour headsets.
The HOHO bus also has the headsets with info as you're going by the places where you can choose to get off or not.
