roofing and siding - why so much?!?

I have had a bunch of estimates done for roofing and siding my house. It is not a very large house, although the whole thing would need to be sided (there is no brick or anything).

Every quote that i am getting is between $27k and $31k and the bluk of that price is for the siding.

I have read about other peoples pricing on here and i can't understand why ours are coming in so high!Chat Icon

That does seem very high, we sided our house and it was only $7500. I have a hi-ranch

I did cedar looking vinyl in the front and regular vinyl around the back and sides.

What is the current construction of your home? Could it have something to do with that?

Are they removing the shingles that are already on the house?

Re: roofing and siding - why so much?!?

I meant did you have shingle, brick, or siding already? I thought maybe if they had to remove and replace siding that might be more expensive... but now I just have no idea!

I've gotten several quotes for our house in that ballpark. We're having the old siding removed, new housewrap, new insulation, siding, replacing 4 windows in the bedrooms with larger ones and moving 1 in the wall air conditioner to another area.

OK...I think it would be to take all the old shingles off, I though they were not going to.

Mystery may be sloved!
Well, that stinks it's just going to be very pricey then!

You don't have to take off the old shingles. Most of the people I talked with that had siding done did not take off the shingles.

My husband would like to remove the shingles and I have a feeling i won't win that battle. When he gets an idea in his head....he won't listen to me about it. Especially when it comes to house stuff b/c he thinks i dont know what i am talking about. Although i do all the research and he hears one thing and thats it. so frustrating!! Chat Icon

Re: roofing and siding - why so much?!?

That is probably the biggest reason why the price is so high, make sure that the person doing it has all the proper licenses because most house on Long Island have asbestos shingles and they need to use special equipment to take it off and dispose of it.

Thanks...we actually have cedar shingles b/c our house is pretty old. We are toying with the idea of having it painted instead. But I am pretty sure that the paint on it is lead....if it's not one thing...it is another!

Well that is good, and because it is cedar that is probably why it has to come down.

DON"T replace the cedar w/ vinyl. have them power washed, stripped and repainted/stained.

I would also recommended leaving the shingles... but it's a matter of personal preference.

Re: roofing and siding - why so much?!?

we have brick on the bottom half our home front and back and for siding and roof we payed 24k. the front has the cedar type and the rest is vinyl. I think it depends on what they replace as well. the color of our siding supposedly was also a special order its a barn red, dont know the exact name. and the roof was in bad shape.
