People overexaggerate. I've had more painful cleanings (pushing back gums, etc) than root canal.

Plus, you're all numb anyway. Take an advil (not tylenol, its a blood thinner) before and after, and you'll be just fine.

Re: Root Canal--how bad is it??

I was okay with a root canal. I had two of them. One was a breeze. The other, the root canal failed. That WAS NOT a breeze. That was really bad, but that's VERY rare.

Ugh, I'm freaking pregnant and can only take tylenol unless my ob/gyn says differently!
I have bad gums and I get cleanings by the periodontist that freaking suck so i am used to pain...
Just wondering if the aftermath is very painful...

Yes. Chat Icon

Ok not really, I'm just a big chicken when it comes to the dentist so I'm probably the wrong person to answer this question.

It really depends on your dentist. For my first root canal, the dentist put those things on my eyes where you can watch a movie (I think it's for kids Chat Icon ) so I felt nothing and was fine. This was like 5 years ago.

My 2nd root canal (this year)...well... I had to stop him twice to shoot me up with more novacaine because I felt it. Chat Icon

My advice - when they shoot you up, make sure they wait at least 10-15 mins for the novacaine to really kick in. The problem was my dentist gave me the shot, waited like 30 secs, and immediately started drilling. I was more numb when I got HOME than during the entire root canal. Chat Icon

ETA: The aftermath is not painful at all.

OMG, feeling the drill is my worst nightmare and I've had tons of dental work... I like the sound of that movie thing but I doubt this guy has that...maybe I should go to a pediatric dentistChat Icon

Re: Root Canal--how bad is it??

My mom has had several and my good friend just had 2. Neither has ever felt anything. If you have a good dentist, you will be FINE!

I woke up during the procedure to take out my wisdom teeth. Now, that hurt like he!! but it was liveable -- and the pain went away as soon as they gave me more novacaine... I can't imagine a root canal being worse than that!

You will be okay. Chat Icon

Re: Root Canal--how bad is it??

I had a root canal on a front tooth....

The pain before was excruciating......as soon as I got the novocaine, I was in heaven! It really isn't that bad......unless you get a dry socket, ouch!

Re: Root Canal--how bad is it??

IMO, I don't think its that bad at all. I never experienced any pain. You will feel some pressure but no pain. You will be nice and numb!Chat Icon Good luck

Not bad at all! People hype it up to be a lot worse then it really is.

I would definitely recommend going to an endodontist (specializes in root canals) rather than have a general dentist do it.
