Rosa Parks died.

CNN) -- Rosa Parks, who helped trigger the civil rights movement in the 1950s, died Monday, her longtime friends told CNN. She was 92.

Parks inspired the civil rights movement when she refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man in Montgomery, Alabama in December 1955.

Her arrest triggered a 381-day boycott of the bus system by blacks and led to court rulings desegregating public transportation nationwide.

And, I REALLY am NOT trying to start trouble. But, I learned in college that Mrs. Parks was "planted". What I was taught was that 1 week prior, a pregnant single woman did the same thing, but it disappeared from the history books because no one took her seriously because she was unmarried and pregant. So, the situation was "reinacted" with a woman who could gain support from others.

I know the story about the first lady who was unmarried, but I never heard about Rosa Parks being planted. In any case if she was planted, I'm glad she did it. Who knows what this country would be like if segregation lasted longer than it did.

I also learned (I think at the Civil Rights Museum in Memphis) that Rosa Parks was actually an activist and that the refusal was loosely planned in advance. She might not have known it would be that day, on that bus, but she was planning on doing it. I still think it was a courageous act and worth being an important historical event, but it's interesting to see what is missing from the history books sometimes.

Another thing I learned is that it was illegal to participate in the bus boycotts. So, the cops couldn't arrest a black person for not riding the bus, but if you owned a car and set up a carpool, you could be arrested and put in jail for giving a friend a ride to work. Chat Icon
