Rotavirus Vaccine
For moms with infants who got this vaccine, how did your children react?
Steven is going to the doctor tomorrow and I am on the fence about this.

Re: Rotavirus Vaccine
My dd is 2 1/2 now, so she is too old for the vaccine. I would highly recommend it. Ava was hospitalized at 12 months and then again at 18 months for it. It was horrible. I seriously thought that she was going to die the 2nd time. She just lay in the hospital bed lifeless for 5 days. We are very clean, and she was never in the care of anyone else. The Doctors' told us that it is a virus that is easy to catch- virtually anywhere. I am not one to let any illness go- so the second she was sick both times, I took her to the ped- she just deteriorated fast.
The vaccine was available a few years ago, and then it wasn't - I don't know why. Our peds say absolutely positively get it. We definately will if we have a baby #2.

Re: Rotavirus Vaccine
Our DD had the first oral dose @ her 4 mos visit. She had no reactions. I believe it's a 3x series, so DD will get her 2nd dose at her 6 mos appt in Jan.

Now I am reconsidering this. Maybe I can get it when he is a little older. I just don't feel right getting it for him soooo young (6 weeks).
The reason it was taken off the market is because it was causing bowel obstruction. But, now it is a different strain. However, although it was approved, the FDA is ordering more research on the vaccine. That's what makes me nervous.
Something is telling me NOT to get the vaccine. Maybe I should listen to my gut.

Question--did you ask for it at 4 months? On Steven's sheet of shots, it says the first one at 6 weeks. I just feel he is too young.

Re: Rotavirus Vaccine
our pediatrician wouldn't even consider giving it to Nikolas at his 2 month visit (that is when he had his other vaccinations). He said to wait and for us to make a decision about it at his 4 month visit, which will be in February -
added: I'm on the fence about this vaccination as well, but my nephew had the rotavirus and as the PP said, its AWFUL ..he was hospitalized for a week and so so ill, my SIL went through hell seing him so sick so I am just not sure which way we'll go

At DD's 1 mos visit, our ped told us about the vaccine and told us to give it some thought for her next appt. (He informed us about what happened with the prior vaccine.) He told me that if we didn't want to give the vaccine to her at her next appt (which would be 2 mos), then we could give the first dose at her 4 mos appt instead.
When we returned for DD's 4 mos appt, I was on the fence about it. DH asked the ped what he thought we should do (our ped is the Chief of Pediatrics @ Huntington Hosp.) He was in favor of it, so we opted to follow his advice and go ahead with the vaccine.

Re: Rotavirus Vaccine
When my son comes home from Ethiopia this is the first vaccine I want to discuss. I am not worried that he will get the Mumps. I am worried abou RV. If he gets it he could literally die so this is really a top priority for us.
