What are you doing about childcare?

DH is FDNY. He works 24 hrs. 1-2 a week so we will need someone to take care of the baby either 2 or 3 days a week and the days he works vary week to week. It might be Tuesday and Wednesday this week, and Monday and Friday next week.

I am a teacher.

I'm not sure how to handle looking for daycare... Is there anyone/anyplace THAT flexible with days???

I don't think family is an option for us. Is anyone in a similar situation or have any advice for us?

We are going through the same nightmare now. His hours change all the time and I typically work 2nd shift. We don't want to go with a nanny because we want 1 on 1 time to not be with a stranger. We don't have family in the area either. Chat Icon

We haven't found any day care places that aren't for your typical 9-5 workers. We got into the wrong business I guess.

My DH is FDNY EMS, they don't have the same schedule as the regular FDNY. He works 5 days on, 2 days off, 4 days on, 3 days off.

We are lucky to have my SMIL who is retired, watch the baby on days when we both have to work. Although, DH just got switched to a 3:30pm-11:30pm shift so we will only need her on days when we both have to work for a couple of hours.

I have heard that daycare isn't that flexible with it. Do you have any family or friends locally that could do it? We are paying SMIL.

No, our family is not close by and all of our friends work full time. We might look into in-home day care. Maybe we'll get lucky with someone who will work with us!

My parents did something like this with us. One of my neighbors kept a couple of kids in her house, including me and my sister. It was great!

Good luck, I know it is hard, we lucked out. I don't know what we are going to do when DS is a little older, I want him to have the socializtion of daycare but don't want to go broke paying for it either.
