Runners-- or people who have started running.
So I have recently started to incorporate running into my work out. I never really liked the treadmill-- I was afraid I would fall off (I sometimes lose my balance ). ANYWAY-- it was suggested to me to start because it helps to speed up metabolism, etc. I had been doing the ellipitcal and various bikes, etc. for cardio before.
Anyway-- I used to run as a kid and my dad was a runner for most of his life... I find now that I really like it. I always wanted to get back into it because you really feel like you are doing something great for your body, etc.
I have noticed that most runners are really lean...After a good run, I feel it all over--so I know I am getting more benefits than just my cardio workout. I was wondering if you had picked up running-- if it leaned you out, or if your body changed at all? Since I have been the weight I trying to get back to-- I know my body stays the same, it's just slimmer, etc.

Re: Runners-- or people who have started running.
I was a lot like you. I would only do the elliptical for cardio, occassionally the bike.
When I started on the treadmill, I noticed even though I was burning less calories (according to the machine), I felt it was a much better work out. I guess its because its higher impact, so I feel like I am doing more.
Since I started running, I noticed that my problem areas (hips and thighs) are finally starting to slim down. It has always been really hard to lose weigh in these areas in the past.

I really like to run, however, I have asthma. Usually, my body is ready to run more but my lungs won't let me. I always feel like I am really working the parts of my body that I want worked! I have gained about 10 pounds since my wedding (october 06) and I started speed walking about a week ago. I take my puppy with me and we go out for about 30-40 minutes. I have not seen results yet, give the time, but my legs, arms, and abs have been sore after.
I think that if you enjoy running, you should do it. In high school, the track team always had the leanest bodies. I think you should do it if you like it!

running will definitely make you look leaner. I noticed your other post about ab workouts and I wanted to tell you that running actually seems to help tone my abs. Not like a six pack but I do feel more toned everywhere after running a while. I don't know if this is true with everyone though!

Re: Runners-- or people who have started running.
It's funny you posted this because I just started running about 4 weeks ago. I was a competitive athlete for most of my life and have always had a "lean" build, but since I started working full-time about 2 years ago and am no longer working out like I used to, I put on about 5-10 lbs.
While I am not necessarily looking to lose all the weight I put on, I have started running again in a hopes of going back to my leaner athletic body.
To answer your question, I was definitely leaner when I was running regularly and I hope to get back to my leaner build! I was also more muscular - especially in my thighs!

Re: Runners-- or people who have started running.
yeah-- after a week of doing intervel/endurance running-- I even notice a difference, especially in my thighs-- so, I really hope it keeps up. And my whole body is sore from running too- which just makes me feel I am working parts that other cardio or my muscle training does not get to.
We'll see where I am in another couple weeks after a month of running.

Re: Runners-- or people who have started running.
I used to run quite a bit as well and then stopped, I just started again, went for a run 2 nights in a row and I feel great, I feel better than when I workout on the cardio machines When I was running some time ago, I could see it in my legs and I felt slimmer all over, its a great workout! What really works for me is to alternate running and sprinting fast and slow to speed up my cardio effects.
Good luck!

I <3333 running. Nothing beats a long run to get you going in the morning. It makes you feel great all day. I am still enjoying my "runners high" from this morning as I am typing this!!
It makes you feel/look great AND it is SO addicting.

Re: Runners-- or people who have started running.
I was running 4 miles in the morning (every other day so I did not kill my knees) and it was the best way to start my day. I have done every type of cardio and running absolutely did lean down all over and quick. I also am able to maintain my weight pretty effortlessly with the routine and the cardio is done in under 40 minutes.

Re: Runners-- or people who have started running.
I just started running, too...because DH runs and eventually I'd like to be able to do it together. I'm like you, Ran...I get dizzy and lose my balance running on the treadmill!
I've been running 2 miles 2 X a week. Is that ok to start with? I also do yoga and other types of cardio at least 2 other days of the week....I am 120...5'4" but I think I feel better at a little lower weight....Edit: I am also NOT good at it yet. I feel like I'm going to pass out b/c I don't think I breathe right during the run....

Re: Runners-- or people who have started running.

Well here is what I was doing when I started... Someone at work who is training for a marathon gave me some times:
Use .5 or 1.0 incline on the treadmill to mimic outdoors.
Mins 1 to 10: Brisk walking
Mins 10 to 25: 2 mins of running, 2 mins of brisk walking... This is interval training to build up endurance.
Mins 25 to 30: Cool Down-- Go back to the brisk walking level, then get progressively slower.
So, that is where I started like two weeks ago. I am already able to run for longer periods of time, so I run for longer-- but still walk for 2 mins in b/t running intervals.
I do variations of this based on what other cardio I am doing that day. I have been starting with 15 mins on the precor, then moving to the treadmill and doing like 25 mins or so on that... followed by some time on the bike. This is mainly on weekends when I have more time at the gym.
On the weekdays-- I do 15 mins on the precor, then 15 to 20 mins on the treadmill with less warm up time since I am already warmed up.
Today I just did running for the 30 mins-- and I warmed up for 5 mins and then did interval the rest of the time.
Once you are comfortable running at that pace-- you can work on speed and distance.
