Runners Advice Needed
Just started running outdoors and I'm loving it so much more then the treadmill. My goal is to to run a half marathon in July of 2010. Currently I'm running a little over a 11 min mile. And I've built up my distance to 2.5-3 miles. I was wondering what my schedule should be. I know everyone's body is different but, if it were up to me I would do it everyday and I remember reading somewhere that I should rest in between. Can anyone share with me their routine? Thanks

Re: Runners Advice Needed
Hi! I am SO PROUD OF YOU KIM! I totally think you can do it and you have so much time to train! Where is the 1/2 marathon you are thinking of doing?
This is my typical workout schedule when training for a 1/2 marathon - I usually run 3 times a week and cross train other days. I usually dont run two days in a row but that is just me.
Monday: Lift weights (sometimes I do speed workouts in addition to weight lifitng) Tuesday: run few miles Wednesday: pilates Thursday: run few miles Friday: off or weight train or elliptical Saturday: long run Sunday rest
Also you can start building miles but probably dont need to do that until April/May. Also when you build you can do it slow if you want, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. Or you can do 4, 6, 8, 10. I have done both ways and have been successful both times!

Re: Runners Advice Needed
Thanks Jenna, I had a feeling that you would answer this post :)
The run is on the 4th of July on Sauvie's Island!!
I'm a bit sore today so, I'm thinking I should rest from running today or do some other form of exercise.
Thanks for your advice!!

Re: Runners Advice Needed
Congratulations and good luck!!
I am not training for anything but my schedule remains the same when I am...I just run longer distances for my long weekend runs.
Monday - Run - 6-7 miles (speed workout)
Tuesday - Spin class/Abs
Wednesday - Run - 7 miles
Thursday - Weights (Plyometrics) and crosstrain for 30 minutes (stair mill/ellipt)
Friday - Off
Saturday - Long run - 13-14 miles
Sunday - Weight Train and cross train for 1 hour
As for running distances I would gauge how you feel. Typically people can add a mile a week. But since you have so much time I would take it a bit slower. Some weeks add a mile and then the next week go back down a mile or two...then the next week go back up to where you were adding another mile.
All the best to you...hope this helps
