Re: Runnin/jogging question
For me personally that is really slow. I actually walk faster than that @5mph... but everyone is different Did you just start running? If so, you will get faster and build endurance but it takes time. Keep it up and Good luck!

Re: Runnin/jogging question
Thanks for the advice and the encouragement! Yesterday was my first day on the treadmill (I'm usually on the elliptical machine). I tried a mix of walking, jogging and raising the incline to get a feel for it. It's not as hard on my knees and shins as I remember, so I will keep it up.

Re: Runnin/jogging question
That is kind of slow, but the important thing is that you were able to last that long on the treadmill! That's great! And you will eventually build up your stamina and be able to go further in less time.

Re: Runnin/jogging question
I have another running question.
Do you think you'll see better results by running really fast for 1 mile or power walking 2 - 3 miles ?
TIA

Re: Runnin/jogging question
65 minutes dived by 4 miles is 16.25 mins per mile
good if you are walking
I run at about 5.5 miles per hour on the tread mill- it's fast but not too fast- but I am always at an incline
running at 6 mph would be a 10 minute mile- witch is ideal for long distances
as far as walking- as long as you are not holding on and can walk that fast that's good- but you should be walking or running at an incline
keeping the treadmill flat is actually going down hill
I like to keep it at 4% average- I normally switch things
but start out with 2%

I am also pretty short (5") so I am thinking the length of my stride makes some small difference. For right now, 4 mph is a fast walk for me. 4.5 is a light jog. 5 is a jog that REALLY gets my heart going, but not hurting.
i had no idea that a flat treadmill is "going downhill". Good to know, thank you!

I didnt know keeping it at a 0 incline was going downhill on a treadmill either! def good to know..I try to keep it at 2.5 at all times but I want to increase it slowly.

The more strenuous the activity, the more calories you'll burn. But to tell you which one of these is better is hard to say because there's not that much difference. Do you have a heartrate monitor? That will tell you which one of those activites burns more calories.

Re: Runnin/jogging question
personally i think if you are just starting you should not be putting the treadmill on an incline. i never ever use any incline on the treadmill and i usually average about 10 minutes a mile, but funnily enough when i go outside to run i can average less than 9 minutes a mile. so for me i don't think incline isn't that important. i actually find running on the treadmill a lot harder than running outside, so i don't like to make the treadmill any harder, but that's just me.
as far as walking fast vs. running what i would do is walk for 2 minutes and run/jog for 2 minutes. as that gets easier try walking for 1 minute and running for 3. just keep adding on to your running time until you feel like you don't need to walk anymore. i realize that can be completely annoying on a treadmill, but if your treadmill has a speed interval button it makes it a lot easier.

Re: Runnin/jogging question
I usually leave my incline at 2 to simulate outisde running. I find it is easier for me to run with a slight incline than flat. I agree with you girls who think is it easier to run outside than on the treadmill. My mile time is faster running on a track than on the treadmill.
New runners: you can also try this website. I did a modified version when I starting running again after taking a long time off (I started at week 5 since I wasn't exactly a "couch potato")

I usually jog at a 4.7 mph pace with a hill setting on level 4 or 5.

Ive seen pple at the gym wearing watches that monitor the cal they've burned, maybe I'll get myself one of those. I know I should really try to improve how fast I can run a mile but I hate running, however, I can walk forever and dont mind it.

Re: Runnin/jogging question
That's funny b/c I find running outside a lot more difficult than running on a treadmill. That could be b/c I have a hard time pacing myself outside and tend to run faster than I do on the treadmill.
Recently, b/c I'm so out of shape, I've been doing 20-25 minutes on the elliptical and then running 2+ miles on the treadmill. I usually run at a pace of 5.5.
When I used to run 4 or more miles, I sometimes got bored. I tried to mix it up by running at a certain speed for .25 miles or for 3 minutes, and then I'd increase my pace by .1. Once I reached a pace of 5.9 or 6.0, I'd go back down by .1. It helped me get through the running and motivated me to run faster. I like running more when I mix it up. Do what feels comfortable for you. Your body will let you know when you've overexerted yourself.

I think running outside it harder then the treadmill. I agree...running outside is much harder for me. The hills and wind all make it more challenging. I run about 5 miles in 40 minutes...outside I am slower!
Im currently in PT for a knee injury due to overuse from running. They told me running on the treadmill on at an incline is awful for your knees....now im so confused as to what to do. Everyone tells you something different.

in your case- I would proably not run anymore and do something low impact like the eliptical
you shouldn't be running outside either with a bad knee

Re: Runnin/jogging question
I am absolutely no expert, and I've really just started running myself, so this is just what I do. I start out walking for about 2 mins, then increase to 4.5. For me, I'm always at a 0% incline. I just don't think I'm ready to increase my incline yet since I'm just starting out. After a minute at 4.5 I increase .1 every minute until I work up to 5.5. After a minute at 5.5 I go back down to 5.0 and increase .1 every minute again back up to 5.5. I try and do 3 miles that way.
I have the book "Body for Life" and I just took their running routine and tweeked it a bit. It states that by increasing the time, you're increasing your stamina. As your stamina increases you'll be able to run longer along with decreasing your time.
Like I said, I'm no expert, but this is just what I do and it has worked for me. I used to only be able to increase to 5.0, but now I can go to 5.5 and work between those to levels instead of working between 4.5 and 5.0.
Start out where you are comfortable and work your way up.
Just getting out there and starting to run is AWESOME
GOOD LUCK GIRL!!!!!!!
