Running into a problem here...
My dad and my DH have been doing work to the house we're moving into. My dad is very upset about the wallpaper situation in our bathroom. He said that it was put directly onto the sheetrock with glue. I guess there was no prep beforehand. I can tell he is getting extremely stressed out about it, so I told him that I do not want him to even think about it. I said we will hire someone to do it.
Then, he starts yelling at me that we're going to get ripped off because it's the hardest wallpaper job to do! The wallpaper is dirty and disgusting. There is no way we're going to just leave it.
Any recommendations? Does anyone know anyone that does this kind of wallpapering that could give me an estimate? It's only on the walls half-way for part of the bathroom. (The rest is tile which we are leaving alone.) It reaches up to a cathedral ceiling. Any advice is welcomed. I HATE this wallpaper!!! Thanks for listening!

Have you ever watched Sell this house? I see them paint right over the wallpaper all the time (primer, then paint). Sometimes if they take the wallpaper off they use a mix of water and fabric softner and the paper comes right off. I don't know if those may be options for you. Good luck!

I agree with this... try the fab softener and water. if that doesn't work, either get an estimate for how much it would cost to remove it by a professional or paint right over it.

Re: Running into a problem here...
If it comes down to redoing the wall I would remove the existing sheetrock and install new. I'm pretty handy but this kind of thing I would hire a good sheetrock person and have them install the sheetrock and spackle the walls so they're even and ready for painting.

Re: Running into a problem here...
Thank you for the responses. We are definitely going to hire someone to come in. We are getting a number from one of my DH's friend's tomorrow.

Re: Running into a problem here...
You should go out, buy DIF, they sell it at hardware stores, then spray is all over. Take a wet, HOT sponge, soak the walls and scrape away. Make sure you make that water hot, wear gloves and it will work. We had wallpaper all over. You will definately need to spackle, sand after but it will work. We just did this.
We had to fix a wall majorly and even pay someone to take wall paper down in some rooms because it was too much, and it cost a ton of money just for removal and prepping of the walls. For a bathroom, that's usually small enough, give it a try yourselves.

We used Dif too! My dad is a painter and wallpaper hanger and that's what he gave us to get the wallpaper off of our house- she had even wallpapered the closets

I have the same thing in my house. It seems that they put up the wallpaper with Krazy Glue! We had to rip down all the sheetrock and redo it. There is NO WAY to get the wallpaper off.
ETA: We did try DIF among other things. Nothing worked. We were ripped off the sheetrock with the wallpaper.

i agree with this
my ceilings were stucco - my contractor hung the thinnest sheetrock over it- - bam - just like new and alot less time consuming

Re: Running into a problem here...
This is the same situation we had in our bathroom!
There is no use trying to remove the paper, even with DIF - the sheetrock paper is going to peel off with it.
We put up new sheetrock - problem solved!

Re: Running into a problem here...
Thank you again for all of the replies. We are having someone come look at it on Monday. My dad and DH have been doing all of the other things in the house themselves and I think at this point my DH wants to just make his life a bit easier. Can't say I blame him! Wallpaper is sooo annoying!!

Re: Running into a problem here...
The only problem with painting over wall paper is that it eventually lifts and you get cracks in the paint. This is what happened in our house. We ended up spackling over the seems and then repainting. (My dad is a very good spackler.) However, in the end it would actually have been much better to just rip down the dry wall and start over (especially because we had already ripped down the ceiling tiles and put up new ceilings.)
Just some food for thought.
Good luck with your renovations.
