Running my first 5K tomorrow! **UPDATE!!**
I'm so excited, but nervous. I'm running a 5K in Philadelphia because it raises money for ovarian cancer research, which is really important to me because my mom died of ovarian cancer six months ago. Training for this 5K has helped me so much in dealing with my mother's death - it's given me a way to turn it into something life-affirming, I guess, without getting too sappy about it.
I'm so nervous though - I've raised $1300 from family and friends, and I almost feel like I'll be letting them down if I do badly in the 5K.
I've been mostly lurking on this board, but you guys and your running tips have been really helpful and inspirational to me the past few months, so I wanted to thank you! I'll keep you updated with how I do when I get back from Philly on Monday...
UPDATE***
Well, I'm pretty new to running so my goal was to finish in under 33 minutes. In Philadelphia yesterday it was 85 degrees with 97% humidity (97%!!!) so mid-race my goal changed from "under 33 minutes" to "please don't pass out." It was so hot and sticky out there, it was crazy! I've never run in anything like it. I crossed the finish line in 33:28, but really, I know that I pushed myself as hard as I could so I'm happy with it. Plus, my pace was a 10:46 minute mile, and that's the fastest I've EVER run 3 miles. And we got a last-minute donation of $100 to bring the total to $1400! It was very emotional for me to spend the day among so many women who had fought and survived ovarian cancer, and to be around other people like me who had lost mothers, sisters, grandmothers, and friends. I love how running is not just a sport; it literally made me cry yesterday to be there.
Thank you for your encouragement! Now, when's the next race...????

Wow Dava, what a true inspiration you are I am so sorry for what you had to go through but it is so wonderful that you were able to overcome it and turn it into something so positive.
Congrats on your accomplishment!!! You should be very proud for not only how you ran and the $ you raised to help others but by how you committed yourself wholeheartedly. Bravo!!!!
