Running on the treadmill...need some opinions

I am currently doing intervals at 3.5 incline

walk - 3 minutes at 4.0pmh
jog- 3 minutes at 5.0 mph
run 1 minute at 6.0 mph- last one 6.5

I find it's the best way to keep myself going- so I am not looking to change that

so I am doing 6 - 7 minute intervals- total 42 minutes- willing to do 1 more up to 49 minutes (then I am out of time most days) and 5 minute cool down

they are not easy- but not hard

would you- raise the incline or increase speed?

my goals are to tone and lose weight- not running time

soon I plan on switching the times around- 2 minute walk, 3 jog, 2 run- but I am not there yet (mentally- physically I could do it- but it's more mental for me)

TIA

For me personally, the higher the incline the more "butt" muscle I build........LOL

If you are looking to tone and lose weight, I would increase the speed and not the incline just yet. Your incline at 3.5 is pretty decent to start with so I wouldnt be so quick to change that yet if its weight loss you are looking to achieve first. But... every person's body is different, so you may have to see how it works out for you for a few weeks. Chat Icon

do you do this every time? I think you would benefit from doing a long slow jog. constant intervals are just going to lead to injury, overtraining and fatigue. there is a lot of research that shows keeping your heart rate at ~60% of max is best for weight loss.

You can do a preset where it changes incline/speed for you every few minutes or do a light run/jog on it at a lower incline.

I would focus on getting your jog up to a 6.0 and run up to a 7.0-7.5. You can totally do it by raising your speed .1 or .2 every week.

I wouldnt raise the incline...I do my intervals at no higher than a 2.0. and my tempo run is at .5 incline if that. Anything higher I have been told there is a large risk of injury when running...not walking. It's better to get your hills outside if possible.

when i do intervals on the treadmill i go full blast.

warm up (3-5 mins)
light run/fast walk 1 min
run as fast as i can (pre preg that was like 8.5+) for 30 secs

That's awesome Beth!

What's nice about this is now you will be able to see in a few weeks how much more speed you are able to sustain. The intervals really are a great fatblaster and I have seen amazing results with it! I recently started bumping up the speed because I didn't think I was working hard enough. I do reach a point were I don't know if I can continue, but you just do it because when you push your body to it's limits all you really need is mental strength and we sure have that! Chat Icon

Re: Running on the treadmill...need some opinions

10 years ago (wow I feel old) I was in college and bartending- so I spent hours at the gym

I did 45-50 minutes of walk-jog-run...I never looked better- so I know this works for me- I swear I look skinner today...

And I did run them faster back then - I think 6.5 and 7.5...thanks for pushing me to get back to that!
