Safety gadgets: which ones do you really use?

How many of those safety gadgets have you found yourself to be using? Outlet covers, safety door locks, soft edges for tables, cabinet locks?

I know that I haven't even had the baby, but I don't know if I should register for some of these safety things. How soon do you need certain things? Are some things a waste?

I use the outlet ones-not the plug in ones but when you change the whole plug and you have to turn it to plug anything in.

We locked the knives drawer.

We believe that no safety gadget can replace actually watching your child 100% of the time and teaching them what's off limits and what's theirs to touch.

My parents didn't lock anything, and we never ate, drank, cut anything we weren't suppose to do.

But that's just how we feelChat Icon

I think alot of the safety stuff is a waste of money.

I thought this too based on my own upbringing but wondered that since I don't have kids yet, maybe I am missing something.

So many things have changed. My mom said I slept on my stomach and slept with a blanket. How did I survive?

Exactly! We grew up with non safety cap containers, metal playgrounds with no safety mulch. Most of us grew up on Formula, and even now, new moms are meant to feel horrible if they don't BF.

Yes over time things were discovered and made better like highchairs, carseats, crib slats, medicines.

I actually read those outlet plugs are more of danger than a safety measure, they are a choking hazard!

How we grew up in one piece baffles my mother now!

When i was about 6 months old, I rolled out of my carseat because i wasnt' buckled in, nowadays, my parents would have went to jail!

Some things are just over the top in the way of safety, i think if you over safety your house you have this false sense of security and safety for your child, and when that happens it leaves room for error.

You were luckier than some other kids, thats how.

Personally, I believe in protecting my child from serious harm whenever possible. You can't watch 100% of the time -- you will need to go to the bathroom, the phone will ring, etc.

I replaced my outlet covers with child proof ones that slide shut when you remove the plug. I have cabinet and drawer latches in the kitchen and dining room cabinets. I strapped tall dressers the the wall so they can not tip if she decides to climb up the drawers. I have a gate to block the kitchen when the oven is on, and gates to block the stairs.

Let me tell you how much more I am able to relax not having to say "no" all day long!

I use the table bumper since little ones aren't that steady and we have had our fair share of head bumps

Locks for cabinets with cleaning supplies in them

Pool alarms

outlet covers

ITA...

I have one cabinet with hazardous cleaning materials and such locked up with baby proof gadgets, I have a gate for the stairs, and two tension gates that can be used to block off certain rooms of the house when I need it. But right now I don't even have socket covers yet. But I'll get those and that's about it. Oh - and certain furniture pieces will have to be strapped down.

I wouldn't register for those things if I were you...it's a waste of perfectly good registry space, IMO. You won't need them for months. The gates you can register for...they can get pricey.

We have those locks that hold the cabinets closed, but its only a matter of time until he figures out how to open them! We found that a lot of babyproofing is improvising! I wouldn't register for them, get them when you need them, as you need them!

Def outlet plugs since jacob looooooves putting his fingers in sockets.. and also magnetic locks for under the sink cleaners. Thats it. He cant reach drawers and other cabinets just have tupperware or pots and pans in them. Oh and gates i got too.

We gated the stairs, did outlet covers, moved our cleaning supplies to a top cabinet and used cabinet locks for some cabinets.

Oh and we also bought this plastic thing for the DVD player, but that was not for safety just because they would turn off the TIVO and and take the dvds out in 2 seconds flat. They can take the plastic off, but it takes them a few minutes.

Get it when you need it, excpet maybe gates.

I agree as well. Christopher moves QUICKLY and now that I have Kaylee, I can't watch him at ALL times, as much as I would like to. He gets into everything and I HAVE to take the necessary precautions.

We use outlet covers, drawer and cabinet locks, gates for the stairs, and we also have our computer area blocked off with a gate, because there's just WAY too many wires and plugs.

We have Katherine gated into two rooms most of the time we're home. As a result, we don't take too many other precautions.

I will get furniture straps once she's a bit older and perhaps stays in her room alone (which we don't allow now).

Otherwise, sometimes, we put some contraption on the pantry doors to keep her out if we're in the kitchen and she's roaming freely.

Re: Safety gadgets: which ones do you really use?

We had to safety proof the house, living in a split we have 3 gates up-- 1 on the top of the stairs going to the bedrooms, 1 from the kitchen to the den down stairs and 1 from the den going upstairs.

We have put latches in all the drawers and cabinets in the kitchen as well as in the den

We have also put outlet plugs on all the outlets

And we have put cpovers on the burners on the stove so JAcob can't turn them on..

We have put extra padding on obscure places where we didn't thinkwe would need it like the edge of our grand piano, he has walked into numerous times already,, at age 1, they don't really look they just walk.

I feel really safe with all that up..

There are numerous companies out there that will come in and babyproof your home.. You can have them come in and give you an estimate. Many of my friends used a company called babysafe.

I absoultely 10,000 percent recommend the Tot-Locks magnetic locks for your cabinets with cleaning supplies. Even at almost 4 Ryan cant get in.

The only other things we did was outlet covers and a gate on the stairs.

Oh and now I have those things to go over the door know, but to keep Ryan in his room when he is in Time-Out and to keep him out of our room when we areChat Icon
