SAHMs...what kinds of activities do you do w/ your 2 year-old?

We've been stuck inside the past 2 days because of snow/ice, and my poor DD is becoming reliant on her Cookie Monster DVD...

What kinds of things do you do w/ your kids to keep them entertained? I tried sitting down and playing Memory with her. She was really interested in it...for 3 whole minutes. Chat Icon

My DD is three but she has been doin a lot of these for a while:

-she plays independently with her my little ponies, cabbage patch dolls, princess dolls, tea party, building castles with her legos or buiding blocks, playing with all her little people sets.
-disney movies, coloring in High chair,
-we play go fish, candy lane, puzzles - 48 pieces and other board games she just got for christmas
-we also go on playhouse disney and she loves playing those games on the computer...as well as Fisher Price little people games on their website,,,great instructional games that get them used to the computer too!

I'll just shut off the tv and tell them its playtime. They have 18 million toys but they love taking them all out of the toy bin, then sitting in the toy bin and burying each other in it.

DD plays alot by herself, just with the million toys in her room. I also bought a giant Step 2 kitchen for her. Keeps her super busy. She likes to color alot, "read" books all day, play with our dogs, etc.

Try some of these games:

My 2 yo. DS goes to daycare so he gets to play alot during the week but on weekends, I try some of the activities suggested on online websites.

Toddler activities

Last week I bought in a bucket of snow, put out some spoons/ladles and bowls/cups and let him have fun!

I also rented some learning and sing-a-long DVDs and let him watch those. He loves them.

stickers, coloring, reading books, baking (when I am desperate). On Sunday we played "catch" on the stairs.. she loved seeing the ball bounce down the stairs and I kept giving her the ball back, etc.

My DD loves playing with her dolls. She likes to pretend they are having a birthday. She gives them each a plate and fork and then sings happy birthday with her pretend cake. She loves loves pretend playing with her dolls, stroller, and her pocket book.

She also loves playing with her snap and go dolls and babies.

We also color, play with playdoh, model magic, dance, play instruments, read, .

Re: SAHMs...what kinds of activities do you do w/ your 2 year-old?

besides playing with her toys, I try to develop her pretend play routines beyond what she already does (add new steps into them).

reading, reading, reading!

coloring

I'm trying to teach her to do worksheets, like categorization (color all the foods, clothes, etc. or "circle" all the "H"s, though she just colors them)

play doh

paint with water sets

stamps

foam sticker kits

Alex Toys craft kits, like make a puppet

colorforms/magnetic scenes

we call relatives b/c she loves talking on the phone.

iPad games and books

flashcards (she actually likes them)

I let her play in the sink like it is a water table.

we cook together. today we made cookies for our contractors and then she served them! so cute!

we have a huge basement play room with everything little tykes...play house, small climber, kitchen set, vanity, bounce house, easel, etc. she could stay down there forever!

my DD isn't a very active/climber/runner type kid. She loves her dolls and arts and crafts.

Re: SAHMs...what kinds of activities do you do w/ your 2 year-old?

Thanks for the ideas, everyone.

My DD is really good at playing by herself and keeping busy. I guess I just feel guilty not sitting WITH her and playing...KWIM? This is why I didn't make a good SAHM--I was so preoccupied with cleaning the kitchen, straightening the toys, going through junk mail, etc. etc. I also spend a lot of time caring for her little brother...he's teething, not napping very well and is a little moody these days.

I guess I feel guilty for not sitting down with her and getting crafty.

Thanks so much for the ideas...I'm definitely going to try something new tomorrow, since I have no school...AGAIN... Chat Icon
