Sales people in stores
We have been furniture shopping lately and I am so annoyed with the sales people! As soon as you walk in they run up to you and start hassling you. Then when you see something you like and want to know more they are no where to be found. Uggg Am I the only one who is so annoyed by this? How do they make a commission then?

Re: Sales people in stores
just so you know, most furniture stores require their salespeople to approach a customer as soon as they walk in the door.
That's why they do it.

Re: Sales people in stores
I actually tell them that I am just looking, if they give me their name (or card) when and if I find something I like I will ask for them, if they continue to follow me around I usually ask them if there is a problem, and when they ask why, my answer is because you obviously didnt understand what I just said.

OMG Yes! We went into Raymour & Flanagans and there was a croud of about 15 standing in front of the door. I refuse to EVER set foot in that store again.
Meanwhile, we bought our Outdoor set at Fortunoffs and we couldn't find a single person to help us

Re: Sales people in stores
It drives me crazy too. When we went to The Place one of the salesman told us that they are supposed to approach you immediately and then follow you around and not approach anyone else until you leave....how annoying is that?? Its especially annoying when you are just browsing and have no intention of buying anything that day. When the guy told us that it made us feel like we had to leave since we didnt plan on buying because otherwise we were preventing him from getting commission from someone else.

It was extremely wrong of him to tell you this.

It is true though...this is what they are forced to do otherwise get in trouble. It sucks...

Yes, just last weekend we went to Raymour & Flanigan. I was prepared but wasnt prepared for that much annoyance. Hi Can I help you, no we are just looking around, thanks. OK my name is "so and so"; let me know if you have any questions. Great, thank you.
We keep walking and walking b/c the place is so big, I turn around, and I say to DH, you know we're being followed, right? He's like yup. Im like, ya, time to get the f'k outta here. Before I got a chance to the door, she had to let us know 2 times, if we have any questions to please ask her. WHAT KIND OF QUESTIONS COULD I POSSIBLY HAVE FOR YOU????? Most of the info is written on the tags and if Im a bit confused, I told you the last 3x, I'd ask you. So PLEASE stop!
We left and ended up buying our furniture somewhere else.........where we were not baggered in the least. It was great.

Re: Sales people in stores
I can give you some inside information into furniture stores!
While in school, I worked part-time for about a year as a receptionist (at the front desk) at Ethan Allen. I had a list of all of the designers (all "sales" people at EA are interior designers) working that day. When someone walked in, I would page the first person on the list. They would then call me and I would tell them what the person looked like (when they were out of earshot of course!). The point was for only 1 sales person to approach one customer. After that customer left, I would add that designer's name to the bottom of the list.
EA designers work STRICTLY on commission and they each have a draw (minimum sales) that they have to make each month.
I can also tell you that some people were pushier than others, but overall the sales people I worked with at Ethan Allen were not overly pushy.

to add to this, the designers at higher end stores also take note in re: to how potential clients are dressed. i never "dress" to shop and therefore some might assume just based on my appearance (not slobby mind you , just not "dressed") and that i am "young" that i could not possible afford the furniture. SO not true. still not done w/ my EA purchases and i have already spent WELL over 10k. not to mention, all that was bought thus far was purchased on one sales form (not multiple sales).

That is a complete pet peeve of mine!!! I can't tell you how many "high end" stores that I have walked out of when someone would not give me the time of day. I also look young!
As for EA, there were definitely a few designers who would "judge," but not all of them! Most of the successful ones who had been there for a while knew not to judge people!

Re: Sales people in stores
WOW, this behind the scenes stuff is crazy! I cant stand sales people and usually immediately leave if i am bothered more than once. what i hate most is when they ask me if i need help as soon as i come in the door. if i need to know where the couch section is and am too blind to not see the huge display of couches in the store, THEN ill ask you for help. grrrr.

Re: Sales people in stores
Drexel Heritage's sales staff was great. Very professional, but yet not pushy by any means.
Same with EA's sales staff.
All others are like sharks. Doesn't bother me though. I kind of expect that at a furniture store. I don't mind if they're within earshot, as long as they don't mind my and my DH's comments & criticisms regarding the piece(s).
