Saw a mouse last night...Recs for exterminators/tips for getting rid of mice?
Last night DH and I were watching TV when I saw a small mouse scurry across the dining room. I haven't seen evidence of any others (no droppings), and haven't heard anything.
I also have a baby, so am afraid of some types of traps or poisons.
Would you set traps yourself, or call a company at this point? Any recommendations for companies and cost of having holes plugged?
It digusts me that my baby is playing where I saw a mouse last night.

I put out the traps you can put peanut butter in or the sticky traps under furniture.
If you are worried about your LO getting into these traps, I would consult an exterminator.
We had one last night. Our kitty Bella got him. Poor mouse, he never had a chance.
Hey, you could get a cat!

Set a couple of traps overnight around where you saw it and if nothing in the morning snap them and reset at night. This way your dc won't get hurt by them. Or put in places where dc would never go.
I had a 2 mice in the winter and got them with traps. No need for exterminator. I used the old school wood and metal traps with cheese. Tried newer traps with peanut butter and had no luck. Worked the best. GL

I guess it depends on the mouse LOL, bc Ive seen the cage traps work the best. These are the ones where you put the PB on the inside hinge and once the mouse goes for it, the door shuts and the mouse is locked up for you to release in a field or someplace far away from your home. Ive had the glue and old fashion snap traps and they were hit or miss. Sometimes the mouse can get away from these traps.

Re: Saw a mouse last night...Recs for exterminators/tips for getting rid of mice?
About two years ago, we had a mouse situation. Ooooooh, I was so skeeved! We got traps similar to something someone above said...those box traps type things that keep them in there until you can release them or throw it in the garbage. It's looks like a black box and you can't see the mouse at all once it goes inside, thankfully.
Anyway, we put a few of them in different locations throughout the house and caught about two or three of them. We kept new traps out for a few weeks until we were sure no more mice were coming back. As I said, that was two years ago and we haven't had any since.

Look around for any holes in the foundation, around pipes coming in, etc, for tiny spaces they can get it and plug them with steel wool.
Honestly unless you are infested with mice and see loads of droppings, exterminators won't be able to do too much unless you find where they are coming in.
Vacuum alot, always look around for droppings, esp behind stove, etc. Don't leave food out or crumbs around, don't let baby eat in rooms other than the kitchen, all this will help the situation.

Check for droppings behind all applicances, couch, etc. Clean them up very good if you see them. Then place sticky traps behind all things like couch, stove, refrig, etc. Lay them close to the wall, as mice run along baseboards. NO POISION, mice can carry it and who knows where they will drop it (and you have a baby...). I wouldn't use snap traps, Glue traps (although cruel) work great and you don't have to reset them, or worry about the mouse getting out of them.

Thanks so much for such a thorough reply! DH is buying glue traps. As much as I think they are inhumane, I need to catch these mice! I have vacuumed twice today AND cleaned all my tile floors with ammonia. I am so grossed out by this.
I also called Suburban exterminating and they are coming on Weds for a free estimate, and looking to see if they see holes outside. It's worth a shot--I am willing to pay if it's a guarantee that I won't get more mice.
