Saw something very sad today....

I was in a laundromat and I saw a man who "appeared" to be homeless just hanging around watching people. Someone walked away to go to the dryers and this man took a stack of clothes and walked out the door. I couldn't believe it, I felt so sad for this individual at the moment.Chat Icon

Re: Saw something very sad today....

I feel bad too.... for the person thats clothes were stolen.IMO If you're going to a laundromat, that means you don't have a washer/dryer at home so you probably need money too. Why steal some poor souls clothes? I do feel bad for the homeless guy, but seriously, Not cool.

He stole someone's clothes? That is so wrong. I feel bad he needs clothing but it doesn't justify taking someone else's clothes.

My heart goes out to him, but I wouldn't want my clothing stolen. I like to donate (choose) the clothing I give to the needy!

Re: Saw something very sad today....

I always feel so bad for homeless especially in the winter when I'm outside for 2 minutes running from warm place to warm place, thinking they're just outside period.

I easily would have given up any article of my clothing if it meant he'd have a clean warm garment for even a split second.

That is sad...I always think about the homeless when I'm freezing and complaining. Too bad for the person's whose clothes it was too.

I agree, but I think if he stole DH's clothes, we would be scre wed - there is no way we would ever be able to replace his clothes right now - especially if they were clothes for work.... I'd rather give clothes we aren't using anymore....

Re: Saw something very sad today....

I don't really feel bad for him. Stealing's wrong. My BIL was homeless and the county gave him free housing (in a normal house where homeless live), free food, money for clothing, bus, or extra food, and "passes" to use for Goodwill or thrift stores to purchase clothes. There are resources out there so people don't resort to stealing from others, but sometimes stealing is the easier option. Would it have been different if he stole $20 from the guy? Or $50? Stealing clothes is to me like stealing money...Even worse in some cases, because clothes can be more difficult to replace.

And if he's like BIL, he stole the clothes to sell for money for alcohol or gambling, and not to keep himself warm. Chat Icon

Yes it is wrong, I know there are resources out there but so many of the individuals living on the streets are mentally ill and unfortunately don't receive services they really need.

What article of clothing would be that hard to replace?

something expensive
something that was a gift
something that you got traveling
sentimental favorites - school sweatshirt or something you can't replace
favorite whatevers - pjs that are all soft and comfy

I know that I would not want to have to replace a whole stack of clothing because someone stole my stuff.

Re: Saw something very sad today....

i've had my clothes stolen at a laundromat--and trust me it freaking sux. its not about how hard it is to replace stuff--its the feeling of being violated....like some of my favorite blouses were taken---shirts i loved and were gifts, etc. and some dirtbag stole it.

is it sad that the guy is homeless? absolutely--very sad. but like someone else said--chances are this homeless person stole the clothing and sold it to get money for alcohol & drugs....and i'm sure my clothes were no exception in that instance as well as the other person who had their clothes stolen in the laundromat. especially since the guy seemed to be standing around WAITING for someone to walk away from their stuff.

sorry--but when you do something like that -- you get NO sympathy for me.

yes okay, technically there would be "things" that would be difficult to replace but they are only tangibles.

Re: Saw something very sad today....

IMO I would feel violated BUT if he needs them more then me then he can have them.

And I don't think just because someone goes to the laundramat that it means you "need money".

I don't know, my car is tangible and would be difficult to replace but that doesn't make it ok for someone to steal it because they may need a ride more then I do.

I feel bad for the guy if he was really homeless but I couldn't have watched him steal someone else's property and justify it.

Re: Saw something very sad today....

Its wrong of course..but after what my dh saw the other morning, I can totally understand it.

He was on his way to work (downtown) and he said he was at a red light. Next to him there was a truck with cops swarming the area. He looked out and he saw a homeless man FROZEN under the truck. My dh overheard the cop saying how he hated scenes like this and what a shame it was. That was one of the mornings when it was like 15 degrees out. He was trying to get warm under the truck but apparently didnt make it.

After that, I hesitate to keep going over to the thermastat and raising it, I stopped complaining about how cold I was while sitting watching tv with a cup of hot coffee, and now realize that I truly cannot judge someone stealing someone else's clothes if they in fact need clothes to keep them warm in this weather.
