Sayville woman commits suicide after argument

SAYVILLE, N.Y. -- A woman killed herself after she removed her husband from a neighbor's home, where he was threatening the resident with a gun and repeatedly telling her, "It's over," Suffolk County police said Friday.

The husband, Edmund Schaffer, 52, was arrested on charges of burglary and weapon possession, according to police Commissioner Richard Dormer.

Police said Schaffer forced his way into the neighbor's apartment late Thursday and held a loaded semiautomatic weapon to her throat.

The neighbor pleaded with Schaffer to leave, police said.

Then the suspect's wife, Heidi Lynn Baskin, came over, took his gun and left the apartment with him.

When police arrived at Schaffer's house, they found Baskin threatening to kill herself with a different gun.

Despite lengthy negotiations, police said, Baskin fatally shot herself.
