Scared to fly
I'm leaving tomorrow am with DH to go to the Bahamas! I am really scared to fly...I have to get over this quick! I just flew to Fl. this past April, and was fine, so I don't know why I'm being such a baby. Any advice?

Re: Scared to fly
you can take a pill like zanax
but i wil ltell you the flight is REALLY short. just look at the others around you, childen and kids...you will see that they are all OK and that comforts me sometimes.
you can also take sleeping pills but that never works for me- seems ot have the opposite effect, actually.
try to bring alot of reading material so you are distracted.
im jealous of your trip!!! i wish i was going away
where are you staying??

Try not think about it, keep occupied on the place--it is much safer then driving and it must be said if g-d forbid any1 is supposed to die it will happen no matter what ur doing so dont think bad things just cause it is an airplane..b safe and have fun!!!!

Re: Scared to fly
You are actually MUCH more likely to die in a car crash than in an airplane... I think I read in a magazine that in the past 5 years or so there have been no crashes of commercial airlines, so actually they say right now there is 0% chance of you dying in a plane crash.

Re: Scared to fly
I'm also scared to fly, never was either and then all the sudden the past few years, I have anxiety attacks prior to flying. Sometimes I take an anti-anxiety pill along the lines of xanex which I have a RX for. But other times I usually just preoccupy myself with my music, or something to keep me busy on the plane.
You can always take a sleeping pill or a benedryl which will help you sleep through the flight.

Re: Scared to fly
I am scared to fly. I have been. I take a valium which was prescribed by my Dr. for my fear. But it doesn't always help.
Nothing anyone can tell you will help unfortunately.
Good Luck! And just think, your panic will only last 3 hrs

Re: Scared to fly
the key is to keep yourself occupied... take ipod/cd player so you dont listen to the "noise" of the plane cause I know I start imagining weird things when I hear a noise I dont recognize

This is exactly what I do.
I was terrified to fly, anxiety attacks and all, but after a couple of times, I would just keep myself occupied and found that to work. Don't even think about the fact that you're flying. Pretend like you're on a train or something like that.
Good Luck

Re: Scared to fly
Definitely keep yourself occupied -- I also try and stay up as late as I can the night before so I'm very tired that way I can sleep on the plane!! Have a great trip!

Re: Scared to fly
I take xanax as well, I used to be so terrified of planes that I did not fly for 11 years...I just recently flew to Chicago for business (by myself) and to Vegas with my FH for vacation. I was fine (took xanax) and now I am no longer afraid!...Still need the pills tho, just to keep me calm.

Re: Scared to fly
you can always take benadryl 50mg..it should make you tired so you can sleep. also my dh used a portable Dvd player which was very useful on our plane ride to hawaii. he is not a big fan of flying!
Good luck!

Re: Scared to fly
Keep occupied.
Our flight down to FL went quickly because FH and I had his iPod and we were mouthing and actiong out Avenue Q! HAaha
Don't depend on portable electronic devices thogh because some of them can't be used during takeoff and landing, which for people who are afriad, is the scariest part of the flight. Check with the airline to see what's allowed.
Are you on an airline that has TV? That alwyas makes it go by more quickly!

Re: Scared to fly
You can take Xanax
You can have some drinks before the flight
I have flown twice within the past 2 years and these were the only times I have ever flown. I get scared everytime I get on the plane because I just hate flying.
Bring things with you like magazines, or a book, or ipod/mp3 player to keep your mind off of the flight.
Good Luck! You will be ok.

I do this too- if they are all ok and look calm, then I know all is good.

Re: Scared to fly
Hi Laura,
I am completely terrified to fly. It is such an irrational fear, but it is there.
My least favorite part is taking off. I pray the whole time, but you will see once you are up there, you will be fine.
I urge you to visit this website, and read about the fear of flying. You are going to be just fine!!!!!

Have a wonferful time!

Re: Scared to fly
I am also scared of flying, but I really should be more terrified when I'm on the LIE, the truth is that is more dangerous. Try to think rational thoughts—it's the safest mode of transportation. I go through this every time I am taking a vacation. I'm flying to Austria in September and I'm already nervous. Good luck.
(I also suggest checking out the website that KristenNYC posted. I plan to memorize it before my trip.)
