Scary experience at my glucose test this morning

So I had my 1 hr this morning. Drank the stuff and actually liked it...just tasted like flat orange soda. Anyway, go in to exam room and my dr comes in with the nurse, and she starts taking out all these vials for blood. Turns out they were also doing my 3rd trimester blood screening in combo with the glucose test. Didn't know that, but that's fine. It was like....6 vials I think. Anyway, she takes the blood, I'm ok, then all of a sudden I get really lightheaded so they have me sit back and get me some water. I started seeing spots and it was almost like my hearing went....and by the time they came back (it couldn't have been more than 20 seconds later i don't think) I was passed out apparently. I guess my blood pressure just nosedived from all the blood they took. I came too right away and they gave me more water and some cookies. It was pretty scary though.

This didn't happen to me though when they took that huge amount of blood (those 9 vials) at the beginning of the 1st trimester. My OB said it could have been that since I drank the glucose drink, my blood sugar was spiked way high and then they just took all my blood out right after. Also she said it happens sometimes and it doesn't necessarily mean that I'm going to fail, it could just be that my body is reacting differently now in my 3rd tri with taking all the blood than it did months ago at the beginning of the pregnancy. Anyway, just wanted to let you all in on my experience. This of course, was my first appt that I went to without my DH. I figured why should he sit there with me, it would be no big deal, guess I was wrong. So I called him when I just got to work and told him that if I fail that he has to come with me to the 3 hr.

I just Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon that I pass.

Thanks ladies. Chat Icon

I feel much better now, I'm at work. It was just surprising to me that I reacted that way. I wasn't worried about the test at all prior to it. I really don't think it was the test itself. I just think it was the glucose in combination with all the additional blood they took at the same time for my 3T screening. I think had it just been the glucose test itself I would not have reacted that way.

Re: Scary experience at my glucose test this morning

Glad you're ok!! I had a near passing-out experience and my DR said that when you're pregnant your blood pressure lowers, etc. so it could have been that for you too. Then compile that with all the blood they took...

Just glad you are ok....

That has happened to me in another situation and I had just left the doctor and got sick on the street....

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon glad to hear your okay.. defiantly scarey experience and being alone without dh had to make it scarier. It sounds like a reaction to the drink Ive read a few times on here people having same reaction after. Defiantly remember this next prengnancy so you can let them know and hopefully they do the other bloodwork another day next time. I hope you passed so you dont have to worry about the 3hour.

Re: Scary experience at my glucose test this morning

Sounds silly of the lab or Dr to order all that blood work after you've fasted and drank that sugar drink! No wonder you passed out, poor thing!

Glad you're OK!!!
