Scary Night for me as a new mom...and some questions
So, my DH is working nights, a 6pm-2am shift. About 7pm tonight I had a pretty bad headache, so I took some advil and ate something thinking that would help. DS had been asleep and woke up crying. I wasn't feeling well so I laid down with him on the couch and his paci and was trying to get him to calm down when I realized that I really, REALLY had to throw up. So, I put him in his swing and he starts to get hysterical and is screaming and screaming and I am just throwing up and throwing up. I finally stop, get him and lay back down, he calms down and passes about. It is about 9ish now, I transfer him to his bassinet (where he has been since then, my dear, sweet boy) and I realize I can barely stand up and when I did, I had to go throw up again I finally go lay in my bedroom and fall asleep around 10 and woke up a few minutes ago feeling better, but still a little shaky and EXHAUSTED.
So, moms, what do you do in this situation? I have no car here (normally I do, but my sister took her car--our spare one--for the weekend), even if I did I couldn't drive, especially with DS. I have some family, but they are all out of town, as is my landlord who lives across the street. I told my DH to stay at work, and my mom to stay in Montauk......but it was really scary worrying about what to do with DS had he woken up.
Ya know, after I had him, I thought I'd be done with the puking

Re: Scary Night for me as a new mom...and some questions
If I felt like that I would probably ask someone to come and help me.
I was taking medication a while ago that made me so drowsy and disoriented I couldn't really watch my kids. I made DH take off from work because god forbid I pass out from the medicine the kids would be on their own.
Feel better soon.

Re: Scary Night for me as a new mom...and some questions
Not sure I understand, why would you need to do something with your DS if you were sick? You mean if you started puking while you were with him? Sounds like you did just fine by putting him in the swing....do you mean if you have to feed him BF? worst case scenario, put a garbage can (with a plastic hefty in it) in the same room with you if you have to heave qucik, then just take out the trash when you finish feeding him. Just don't forget anti-bacterial wipes for you to use on yourself in case what you have is contagious and not food-borne (ie food poisoning)
Sorry to hear you're not feeling well

Re: Scary Night for me as a new mom...and some questions
I think more so b/c this is the first time, as a new mom, where I have had to try to balance him and me, KWIM? His needs have always come first (and he is a pretty good baby, so that is pretty easy) since birth. And I KNOW he will be fine screaming in the swing, but while you are sick, it is kind of unnerving.
I probably should have had my mom come in....if he were old and mobile, I probably would have had to.

Re: Scary Night for me as a new mom...and some questions
I call in the reinforcements - my mom, my sister.
Joseph was 8 months old when DH & I came down with some kind of horrible virus. I would toss up my dinner & return to try to feed him. DH would do the same.
Finally I called my sister in tears to come take the baby.
If you're ever scared like that, we're all here for you.

Re: Scary Night for me as a new mom...and some questions
Heres what I do. I pull myself together and I deal with it. Because I have no choice. I had a herniated disc in my back AND sinus infection AND a baby with a tummy bug and I had to look after him for a week. It was hard, but its all part and parcel of being a Mommy.
IMO, no matter what happens, how sick you are, how sick your baby is, ultimately Mommy is the one who has to do all these things. Welcome to my life.
Do I sound bitter?

That is scary- but I have found that when you have to, you just make it work.
I agree with Rachee- but am not as bitter right now

Re: Scary Night for me as a new mom...and some questions
Kate - hope you are feeling better.
If it's any consolation, I was BFing in the hospital on th e right breast while puking into a pan on my left side (thanks for the Percoset ).
I would say 2 things - if you needed someone to come over, you could come on here and I or someone else could help you out. If you needed to get somewhere, there are always taxis.
Hope you are feeling better!!
