scary, scary night!!

We were in NY at my parent's house over the weekend. We pulled into our driveway at about 12:15am last night/this morning. It was snowing and ice cold out. I noticed that some lights were on in the house...I KNOW I shut everything off before we left. Hmm.

Then we thought that we forgot our house keys at my mom's house...ugh....we had NO way to get in. (it turns out that we actually did have the keys packed up in a suitcase, but we didn't know that until today)

Then we listened closely and heard our fire alarms going off like crazy. I started to freak out a little...

Mike went to check the windows to see if we could break in somehow, and I opened the garage doors to see if there was any way I could get into the house through the connecting door. I opened it...it was unlocked...WHAT?!?! We had locked it before we left.

So I freaked out big time and found Mike (the girls were sleeping in the car this whole time) and told him that the door is open, someone must have broken in.

I ran inside, grabbed the phone (we get NO cell phone service in the driveway) and called 911 from my car. I was shaking like a leaf.

I called, and when I gave the lady my address, she said, "Oh, we had the fire department at your house today, your fire alarms were going off and your neighbors were concerned." PHEW!! Okay, that made me feel much better...but I still made her send the police to my house to check it out, because we were still so scared that there was going to be someone inside.

The police arrived a few moments later. It turns out that my genius hubby left his keys IN the front door. My neighbors checked out the house while the alarms were going off, couldn't turn them off, and called the fire department. They couldn't figure it out either so they left them going. Then they locked the front door, and left the door to the garage open, figuring that we would not have anyway to get inside the house without those keys. Good thinking!

So, I am very grateful that we have such awesome, caring neighbors in this new town. So far today, one neighbor came over with the keys, another called to check up on us, and yet another one rang my doorbell this morning to tell me what had happened. I feel safe here. But BOY was that scary!!!!
